Thank you Kelly and Seattle Dive Tours for saving our dive this morning! Your generosity was greatly appreciated!
Yes! Saltwater State Park TODAY IS OPEN!
Hello is there any chance you found a case like this near pier 2 on Alki Beach. Right near where you have the canopy set up? I left it there May 21st. It is just the case and the charger. I have the light with me
Many thanks to Scott, and everyone at Seattle Dive Tours! We had a fantastic time!
Thanks again to Scott & Klayton, for an awesome birthday dive, and my first pacific coast diving experience! This was one of the highlights from my dive. Loved these giant “cauliflowers!” I think they’re anemones? So cool, despite the video quality;) Very other-worldly.🤘🏼😄👍🏼

Well, it's the final day of AWARE Week 2022! We hope you've learned a bit more about our commitment to conservation and some of the philosophy behind why we place ocean stewardship at the very forefront of all we do.

All we do in the ocean, we do in love.

We dive the places we love with the people we love.

We observe the animals we love with respect.

With drysuit pockets stuffed with trash we leave the ocean better than we found it, and we leave the ocean as better people than when we entered.

All we do in the ocean we do in love.

We thank you for being part of our community, and for letting us share what we love with you.

It's as simple as that, folks. Here in Seattle we're lucky that we usually have a *lot* of both blue and green (after all, it is the Evergreen State), but it's also very obvious and profoundly disturbing when the ecosystem is thrown off balance. Between March and September of this year Washington state received only HALF of the usual rainfall. In dangerously dry conditions, fires continue to burn across the state. From the sea to the summit and (usually) lush green forest in between, we are already feeling the effects of climate crisis.

To us, AWARE Week isn't just about marine debris, but about the overall health of our oceans and our responsibility to be stewards and protectors of our ocean planet. How we treat the ocean has cascading effects on land as well, from our specific ecosystem here in the Salish Sea to our entire planetary atmosphere.

Oui, Monsieur Cousteau...! Our global ocean unites us all: geographically, politically, ecologically, and interpersonally. No matter how far you live from the coast, the health of the ocean still impacts the wellness of all.

This PADI AWARE Week we're reflecting on what a privilege it is to facilitate new and experienced divers' relationships with the great blue unifier.

Her Deepness, Dr. Sylvia Earle, says it best. This AWARE Week (and Worldly Wednesday!) we're thinking about concrete actions we can take toward conserving our global ocean. Conservation doesn't have to be a grand gesture; there are things we can do everyday to make a positive impact on the future of our blue planet. Here are a few easy ones:

🍣 Use the Monterey Bay Aquarium's SeafoodWatch app to make sure your seafood is sustainable

💦 Remember that all drains lead to the ocean, so opt for nontoxic cleaners, skip the pesticides, and wash your car in designated car washes

🏖️ #Take3ForTheSea and pick up 3 pieces of trash when you go to the beach

🧴 Say no to single-use plastics, as they make up an enormous amount of marine debris and never degrade

🐙 Learn as much as you can about the parts of the ocean that interest you, and share your passion to inspire others to care for the ocean

What are some of your favorite easy daily ocean conservation actions?

It's Tuesday of PADI AWARE Week 2021! As a Five Star PADI Dive Resort you may have heard us mention how proud we are to be designated by PADI as one of only two "100% Aware" dive shops in Washington (and only 211 worldwide), and the ONLY "PADI Green Star Award" dive shop in Washington state. But do you know what that all means? Let's break it down:

♻️ The Project AWARE Foundation is a global movement for ocean protection, and this certification showcases our commitment to education and conservation. We teach multiple Project Aware courses, all of our student divers receive the Project AWARE version of the PADI certification card, and every certification we issue includes a donation to Project AWARE.

♻️ The PADI Green Star™ Award is granted to PADI Dive Centers and Resorts that demonstrate a dedication to conservation and environmental protection across a wide range of business functions including water and energy conservation, use of sustainable materials, conservation leadership and more.

...In other words, we don't just *talk* about how much we love the ocean. We act on it, with all the tools we have from our divers to our dollars. Join us!

Urticina crassicornis - This sedentary cnidarian that can be identified by its blotches of color, usually pink, red, green, and brown. The candy-striped shrimp we see on our ocean floors has a commensal relationship with these animals - meaning it lives on or around the anemone and therefore gains protection and food scraps while the anemone remains unfazed!

As SCUBA Instructors we get to witness not only the moment new divers take their first breath underwater, but their transformation into ocean advocates. After you've come snout to snout with a Spotted Ratfish or locked eyes with a Giant Pacific Octopus in her den it's nigh on impossible *not* to want to do everything in your power to protect them.

As divers, it's also impossible not to notice the effects that humans have on the ocean. If you've been in a class or tour with us, you've likely seen your Instructor or Divemaster picking up small debris and stuffing it in their drysuit pockets as they navigate the dive site. No matter how many cleanups we do, it's devastating to see the same types of items (especially single-use plastics) find their way back into the underwater places we love.

This AWARE Week we're sharing some of our inspiration with you. For us, the ocean is literally and figuratively our reason for being: it's where we work, where we play, where we feel most ourselves. We take so much pride in sharing our passion with our students and guests, and we also feel an enormous responsibility to be strong stewards of the underwater world we love, and to empower others to do the same. Thank you for being part of our ocean community!

Happy International Coastal Cleanup Day! As you’re reading this, our teams of volunteer divers and debris sorters are at Des Moines Marina doing their thing! We’re hoping to beat last year’s record of 500 pounds of debris pulled from the marina in a single day.

ICCD also kicks off PADI AWARE Week 2021, so over the next seven days we’ll be sharing more about our commitment to conservation here in the Salish Sea and beyond.

And our Fall Guided Book Tour selection is… The Highest Tide, by Jim Lynch!

Explore our blue planet from a new angle with a three-week discussion-based course led by Seattle Dive Tours’ Visiting Professor of Ocean Literature, Kelly Bushnell (@dr.kelpy)!

Sessions will take place Saturday November 6, 13, 20.

Your $70 ticket includes a copy of the novel shipped to you with a Reading Guide custom-designed for SDT, bookmark, Seattle Dive Tours Marine Life Slate (!) and of course entrance into the course! (Ticket is $50 if you are an e-book reader or already have the book.)

After the success of our last three Guided Book Tours, we’re also continuing our additional sessions to accommodate more time zones! Participants will still be limited to 15 maximum, so don’t delay in securing your spot! (If you would like to attend but cannot afford the book right now, please let us know, as there is a fully-sponsored place available.)

About the novel: The Highest Tide is a celebration of the Salish Sea and an exploration of young adulthood. When thirteen-year-old amateur marine biologist/Rachel Carson enthusiast Miles O’Malley finds a giant squid in the tide flats near his home at the southern tip of Puget Sound, it’s just the beginning of a summer that will change his life forever.

About Dr. K: Kelly P. Bushnell, PhD, is a professor, PADI Instructor, and ocean advocate specializing in ocean literature, history, and culture. When she’s not teaching in the classroom or underwater, you can find her rowing a wooden boat around Puget Sound. Catch up with her at @Dr.Kelpy.
