Are you a scuba diver? You can get a Marine Mammal Rehabilitation dive specialty from Seattle Dive Tours! Kate, our communications specialist, took the course last weekend and spent the evening diving off West Seattle. Among all the sea stars and crabs, the divers also got to see an octopus, and were followed around by two harbor seals!

Best practices for when you’re diving and come across a harbor seal is to observe it, rather than engage with it, just like all wildlife interactions whether you’re on land or at sea. You can learn more about marine mammals, how to keep them safe, and what to do when you see them underwater, at Seattle Dive Tours!

Are you a scuba diver? Check out Seattle Dive Tours latest specialty course: Marine Mammal Rehabilitation!

In the course you will:
- Learn about the different marine mammals present in the Salish Sea.
- Understand the challenges marine mammals face in the Salish Sea, and how SR3 works to address them.
- Understand what divers and non-divers can do to support healthy marine mammal populations.

The instructors are top-notch ocean scientists and scholars, and $5 out of every course will go directly to SR3’s efforts to rehabilitate marine mammals here in the Salish Sea!

What better way to get Shi Shi some fresh sea lettuce than to ask our diver friends at Seattle Dive Tours! Madison, Shannon and Kelly dropped down into about 30 ft of seawater, harvested the sea lettuce, and then personally brought it to Shi Shi at our hospital. Enticed by some flavors of home, she showed immediate interest and even took a few bites! We are cautiously encouraged by this progress.

Thanks Seattle Dive Tours, for jumping into the cold winter ocean to help sealife!

While visiting my bff in Seattle I decided to treat myself to a cold water birthday dive and went with Seattle Dive Tours- I highly recommend them. From the very first phone call booking and coordinating with Maddy in the shop was a breeze; she was prompt, helpful, and gracious. Then my dive guide Kelly was impressively professional and knowledgeable. She obviously has a deep passion for the ocean and an innate love of teaching. I was the only diver on our dives at Saltwater State park, and was so surprised that not only were Maddy and Kelly there that morning but one of the other instructors joined us as well with her dog Buoy! You can tell that these women love their job and make a fantastic, positive team. It was so refreshing getting to hang with other female dive professionals. The gear was well taken care of, Kelly obviously knew the dive site like the back of her hand, and even had a local fish book to help us nerd out and id things after our dive. I cannot stress enough how wonderful this team is- thanks again!
Thank you to everyone who came out on Saturday to help clean up our coast! 100 volunteers picked up 500 pounds of debris from the beach and marina waters, including an electric skateboard and a bike.

Thanks to our partners in this effort Seattle Dive Tours, Highline MAST Aquarium at Redondo, Des Moines Marina, City of Des Moines, and Washington Scuba Alliance!
Thank you Kelly and Seattle Dive Tours for saving our dive this morning! Your generosity was greatly appreciated!

It is #GivingTuesday! Marine education and conservation go on despite global pandemics. Our community came together this year to remove 425 pounds of debris from the Des Moines Marina in September. Want to see more safe events like this? Donate today at: https://mast.highline.edu/donate/

Today is International Coastal Cleanup Day! The MaST Center took part in a collaborative effort with SR³ - Sealife Response, Rehabilitation & Research, Des Moines Marina, Seattle Dive Tours, Washington Scuba Alliance and Des Moines Waterfront Farmers Market to bring volunteers together to make the Puget Sound just a little bit cleaner. We weren’t sure the smoke would clear up in time but we think maybe it cleared up just for us 😉

We had a great turnout as volunteer divers collected marine debris while land volunteers sorted, weighed, and cleaned up the shore. This year, we collected 429 lbs of trash! During these unprecedented times, we were all happy to do a little something positive for our planet 🌎💚☺️

June Art Walk is Thursday June 9th!

Seattle Dive Tours is excited to host photographer Billy Ball from 5-8pm. His photos are a must-see during the Art Walk!

"Just a dude with a camera. My underwater photography began while working as a dive guide and instructor on the Big Island of Hawaii. After a flood of my compact camera housing I made the jump to a DSLR system. With a few mentors and a ton of online research I began to develop my style.

Beginning with a trip to Bali, I realized my love of shooting macro critters. I am able to draw on my experience as a dive guide/spotter to help me find my subjects. Over time my interests have expanded into CFWA and large animals. My passion for teaching people to dive has evolved into a passion to teach underwater photography. I believe very strong fundamental diving skills go hand in hand with photography. By working on both types of skills simultaneously my students are able to evolve their photography rapidly and reduce their impact on the underwater world."

RightWhale

Wrong whales? No, the right whales!
🐋Right whales are incredible rare - there are only 500 estimated Northern Pacific right whales.
🐋Hunted nearly to extinction, right whales were an easy target for whalers due to their slow speed and their skimming feeding strategy. This means that they skim through the water with their mouths open, trapping their food in their baleen.
🐋Female right whales are pregnant for 12-15 months and only give birth every 3-5 years, so their slow life cycle makes recovering their populations numbers more of a challenge.

About the book: We swim in freezing Arctic waters and piranha-infested rivers to test our limits. We swim for pleasure, for exercise, for healing. But humans, unlike other animals that are drawn to water, are not natural-born swimmers. We must be taught. Our evolutionary ancestors learned for survival; today, swimming is one of the most popular activities in the world. Why We Swim is propelled by stories of Olympic champions, a Baghdad swim club that meets in Saddam Hussein’s former palace pool, modern-day Japanese samurai swimmers, and even an Icelandic fisherman who improbably survives a wintry six-hour swim after a shipwreck. New York Times contributor Bonnie Tsui, a swimmer herself, dives into the deep, from the San Francisco Bay to the South China Sea, investigating what it is about water that seduces us, and why we come back to it again and again. An immersive, unforgettable, and eye-opening perspective on swimming—and on human behavior itself.

PacificWhiteSidedDolphin

Also known as the "hooked fin porpoise" the Pacific White Sided dolphin can not only be identified by the white line that stretches from their eye to their dorsal fin, but also their large dorsal fin with a curved end.
🐬It is often unknown that many toothed marine mammals do not use their teeth to chew, but rather to grasp their prey and swallow it whole. These dolphins in particular have 60 conical shaped teeth - what a smile!
🐬 While not often found in the inner shores of the Salish Sea, these mammals frequent the pacific coast often and are not ruled out as possibly sighted animals.
