Altona Yacht Club

Club racing is held on Saturday afternoons from October to May (no organised racing over Christmas period) and the club rooms are open from around 8:30am until approx 6pm on Saturdays during the racing calendar. The club offers unlimited FREE car parking, large fully grassed rigging area, safe launching and retrieving facilities, in all wind directions and almost all wind strengths, for both ‘off the Beach’ boats and trailerables with a safe harbour adjacent to the club. There is ample under cover boat storage for ‘off the beach’ boats, a staffed canteen offering a wide variety of food and a large function room. A magnificent view of the city can be seen from the first floor observation room, which provides a complete view of the whole course area, adjacent to the race control tower. During racing the Altona Yacht Club’s race control tower is in constant radio contact with the rescue boats which are manned by qualified and experienced volunteers. One pre Christmas the other post Christmas. Check our training page for further information.

Many thanks to Nick who today dropped off two donated boats from the Victorian Laser Association to kick-start our juniors ILCA4 program.

The juniors ILCA4 will give our juniors pathways towards racing international class boats.

The generosity of time and equipment is what makes great clubs and associations.

Today was once again a reflection of this type of club and association leadership, culture and community that makes sailing a great sport for so many people.

The last few years of the club have been pivotal moments. From substantial increase in equipment for on water activities, to investment in club infrastructure, hosting of successive state and national regattas, updating of furniture and facilities plus the training program going strength to strength our club is shining as a pivotal organisation within our local and sailing community.

We are honoured to once again be a finalist as DISCOVER SAILING CENTRE OF THE YEAR

In 2025–26, we as a club built a strong participation pipeline that will enable converting 20 Tackers sailors into 18 junior fleet places by end of 2026/27 season.

In 2025/6 we trained 19 people in powerboat handling, and developed a new intermediate racing squad while also strengthening volunteer, instructor and community partnership pathways across the club.

Even though the 2025/26 sailing season has wrapped up, Altona Yacht Club has been anything but quiet!

From our sparkling Gala Dinner in May to the AGM & Presentation Night in July, plus fresh fencing and new concreting in the carpark and more new chairs the place has been buzzing with activity and upgrades.

And the most recent big news is that in August we’ve added five Minnows to our green fleet program meaning we’re on track to kick off 2026/27 with 10 Minnows, building on our awesome 13‑strong Zoom8 intermediate fleet juniors and already thriving Tackers program.

The junior pathway is looking stronger than ever. With the club junior regatta back again for the march long weekend, and advanced junior program planned for 2027/28 season.

And for the senior members there will be a better sailing course added building on our sailing 1/2 introduction course and well as the masterclass will be back again with 2 master-classes planned, one in January another in April. This will build on retention of trainees and maintaining skills of our senior members.

Then there’s another state titles to be hosted, and also plans to host a world championship underway.

The horizon is bright at AYC, the breeze for the 2026/27 season is calling and is shaping up to be a fantastic season for sailors .......of every age.

This has only happened by a committed committee that is continuing to build a sailing community that has fun on and off the water.

Bring it on!
