Huge win for Geelong Cycling Club 17 year old, Declan Pritchard Team Brennan in today’s Stage1 Profound Civil Construction, Merv Dean Memorial 3 Day Club Tour over 101km on the testing Sutton Grange, Metcalfe, Redesdale loop of 50.5km by 2 laps.
Pritchard put in a perfectly timed sprint coming over Jack Aitken/Warrnambool Cycling Club in the last 100 meters to snare a memorable victory with 3rd place going to Ronan Teese/BDCC & Mark O’Brien Carnegie Caulfield Cycling Club 4th.
There was no mercy from when the red flag dropped in the Innes Motors Subaru Outback media car with the first up 3 Tier hill climb competition sprint after only 4.5km with the field shattering into 3 groups & a dangerous lead group of 8 including all the pre race favourites with the exception of last years 2nd place on GC, Brenton Ryan Ballarat Sebastopol Cycling Club - Road / Track
The group of 8 would never be seen again working well together & eventually building up a 3 minute gap by the 2nd lap hill climb competition sprint.
After the 2nd sprint before Redesdale & 76km raced saw again Aitken taking valuable first place 5 seconds time bonus’s giving him the consolation prize of the GC lead over Ronan Teese +8 & Stage winner, Declan Pritchard +10.
O’Brien would start with his expected attacks coming into Redesdale shedding 3 riders to leave 5 riders fighting it out for the stage win.
Tomorrow’s Queen Stage2 over a brutal 110km with nearly 2000meters of climbing finishing on the iconic South side of Mt Alexander will definitely suit the natural climbers, Mark O’Brien & Ronan Teese with Aitken also not giving up his leaders jersey without a fight.
Today’s Stage winner, Pritchard the AusCycling U19 Series Leader will be eyeing off the prestigious Allan Peiper U19 Future Star Award to add to his already impressive list of wins in 2026.
