The person sitting across from your child matters just as much as the program or resource being used.

LAB Learning & Speech is built around highly trained learning specialists and Speech Pathologists, with specialist expertise, one-to-one support and clinical leadership.

That depth of knowledge allows therapists to interpret what they are seeing, adapt intervention and work collaboratively when a child’s needs span different areas.

One-size-fits-all support is rarely enough for complex learning and communication difficulties.

Our approach at LAB Learning & Speech is personal by design. We take the time to understand the whole child and tailor support around their individual strengths, needs and goals.

That means intervention can change as the learner changes. It also means the child is not simply moved through a standard program because that is what everyone else receives.

You’ve had the parent-teacher meeting. Maybe it confirmed what you’ve already been noticing at home, your child is trying, but something still isn’t clicking.

If concerns have been raised around reading, writing, maths, attention, language or confidence, don’t wait until the next report to see whether things improve.

At LAB Learning & Speech, we help families understand what may be sitting underneath the difficulty and what kind of support may be appropriate.

If you’ve come away from a parent-teacher meeting with concerns, give us a call today.

Many children are told they’ll “catch up” —but a wait-and-see approach is not recommended, as it can allow the gap to grow over time.

In our latest blog, we discuss:

• why early reading difficulties should not be ignored
• how reading skills build step by step
• why small gaps can become larger over time
• the importance of phonological awareness, letter-sound knowledge and decoding
• how early, evidence-based intervention can support confidence and learning

Understanding the Cognitive Load of Dyslexia

Dyslexia is more than a reading difficulty—it increases the cognitive effort required for everyday learning.

Many individuals with dyslexia use broader, less efficient brain networks during reading and language tasks, meaning activities that appear simple often require significantly more mental effort.

Understanding the science behind this invisible effort helps us move beyond asking, “Why aren’t they trying harder?” to recognising just how hard they are already working.

At LAB Learning and Speech, we believe that understanding each child’s strengths and areas requiring support is the foundation for effective, individualised intervention—helping every child Learn. Achieve. Believe.

Reading doesn't develop naturally like speech.
While most children acquire spoken language through everyday interactions, reading requires the brain to build entirely new neural pathways.

Successful reading depends on:
• Phonological awareness
• Letter-sound knowledge
• Decoding skills
• Language comprehension

Research shows that explicit, systematic instruction helps children develop these critical foundations for literacy success.
The earlier difficulties are identified, the greater the opportunity to change a child's learning pathway.

Early intervention builds strong foundations for lifelong learning.
