What is Yin Yoga?
Yin Yoga is a slow, floor-based practice where poses are held for a few minutes.
By relaxing the muscles and using gravity and body weight, we work with the deeper connective tissues, including fascia, ligaments, tendons and joint capsules.
It’s not about pushing deeper. It’s about finding an appropriate edge, staying still and giving the body time to respond.

Why do we practise Yin?
Life and exercise can be very active, fast and focused on doing.
Yin offers balance. It encourages us to slow down, breathe and feel. Physically, Yin may support mobility and gently load the connective tissues. Mentally, it helps us practise patience, awareness and being present without needing to fix or force anything.

Why practise with a cool body?
A “cool body” means the muscles haven’t been strongly warmed by exercise—it doesn’t mean being physically cold.
Warm muscles are more elastic and absorb more of the stretch. When the muscles are cool and relaxed, gentle stress may be shared differently through the fascia, tendons and tissues surrounding the joints.

That’s why traditional Yin is often practised before, rather than immediately after, exercise.
Yin should feel steady and manageable, never sharp, burning or unstable.
Yin is connected to Traditional Chinese Medicine. Meridians are traditionally understood as pathways through which qi, or vital energy, flows. Different poses are associated with different meridians and organ systems.

Meridians are an energetic framework. Anatomy explains how the body’s tissues are affected, while meridian theory offers a traditional perspective on energy and balance.

Who created Yin Yoga?
Modern Yin Yoga grew through the work of three main teachers:
Paulie Zink developed a Yin–Yang practice inspired by Taoist yoga, qigong and his intensive martial arts training. His aim included developing flexibility, concentration, fluidity and body awareness for Kung Fu.

Paul Grilley developed the slower, floor-based style commonly practised today, adding his studies of anatomy and meridian theory.

Sarah Powers introduced the name Yin Yoga and incorporated mindfulness, Buddhism and Traditional Chinese Medicine.

Together, they shaped the Yin Yoga we know today.

Tomorrow's Yin practice is an invitation to practise kindness towards ourselves, to soften the inner voice, release the need to push, and learn to listen to what our bodies are asking for.

Just a little more patience.
A little more compassion.
A little more kindness towards the body we live in.

Join is every Saturday

Just a quick message to let you know that tomorrow’s Hatha 9:30am class is cancelled due to a little shoulder injury on my end. Nothing dramatic, but I need to give it some rest!

Sorry for the short notice, and see you on Saturday for Yin at 8:00am!

Behind Balance Club Yoga are two experienced and passionate teachers:

Chochi — a 500-hour trained yoga teacher with further training in Yin, Restorative and accessible yoga, bringing a love of making yoga adaptable, thoughtful and approachable.

Together, we keep coming back to what we believe yoga is really about:

The practice.
The breath.
The body.
The alignment.
The awareness.
The mind.
