Summer Dancing has begun. While our club dances and classes take a break for the summer, there are still square dances that take place. Kelly’s first summer dance was held in May and was moved inside due to inclement weather, but we did not get any pics. The next one is Thursday, June 11 and we hope to be able to dance outside on our large driveway.
This past weekend was the Cypress Funstitute in Cypress Hills, hosted by Zone 6 (the amazing Swift Current group) with Barb and Lorne Smith as the caller couple. As usual, Lorne called a fantastic weekend with hex and travelling dances thrown in, what FUN. Eldon and Carolyn, Val, Renz and Kelly also did tips during the All-Caller dances on Friday night and Sunday morning.
As usual, the “Regina” group were a huge part of the 50-some attendees. For Saturday night’s dinner and dance, we donned our red travelling skirts and posed for this pic.
The next big summer dance will be held in Manitou at Danceland, June 18, 19 & 20, with Eldon Neudorf and Murray Few calling squares, and Larry Pfennig cueing rounds.
See you on the dance floor (or the driveway 🤞🏼).

On Wednesday nights it is PLUS dancing out in Grand Coulee. Barry and Elwood get us through the teach/intro portion at the start of the evening and we dance to taped music (with permission from the artist). This is Mike Sikorsky calling to Long Black Train.

Our Beginner Class has Graduated. We have been so thrilled watching this class go through their lessons each week. We have watched them both struggle, and succeed, as the different calls both challenged and excited them. All have been invited to join our Happy Hearts Club in the fall. We look forward to having them remain a part of our Square Dance family whether they choose to join HH or take the class again. (missing from the Graduation photo are: Louise, Chuck and Nancy and also, sadly lost along the way, Tina and Agnes)
Congratulations to the 25-Week Class of 25/26!

Our Zone 7 All Callers Dance and AGM was a bustling place. We had six caller/caller couples sign up to do a tip and one to cue a round. One of the caller couples, Zane and his wife Vicky, made a detour on their cross province road trip, just so they could join us for two nights of dancing (and calling a tip each night). They joined our Thursday class as angels for our Beginners Graduation Dance, and the dance called by Linda later that night and then came to this All Callers dance on Friday. For those of us who are Plus Dancers, we danced Wednesday night too. What a busy time of year as we draw our dance season to a close.

There was an awesome group of dancers, dancing at Happy Hearts last week; with our main caller, Kelly calling the Square Dance and Ron H. cueing the Rounds. Only a couple of weeks left in this season, but there are lots of opportunities to dance this spring and summer. Cypress Funstitute May 29-31, Danceland June 18-20, Kelly will be holding 5 summer dances from April-August and, of course, Nationals in Penticton. Keep on Dancing.

Happy Hearts “Spring Fling Dance” was yesterday. Murray and Barb Few, from Edmonton, were our caller couple and they made the day so special not only for all of us mainstream dancers, but most especially for ten of our beginner dancers who also attended. It was a fantastic day with an afternoon workshop, where Murray warmed us up with a quick dance and then introduced us to the Plus-call, “Cross Fire” from a couple of starting positions. After the workshop we enjoyed a delicious pizza/lasagna dinner and Lime/Pistachio desserts and topped the day off with an exciting evening of square dance with St. Patrick’s Day themed songs thrown in and two round dances. Dancers came from as far away as Manitoba, Swift Current, Strasbourg, Estevan, MooseJaw, Pilot Butte, Qu’Appelle, Lumsden, and of course, Regina. We had 8 squares. Thanks to Murray and Barb, to all of the dancers who came out, and to everyone who helped organize, set up, host, and clean up.

One of our amazing dancers, Colby, turned 90 this past week! He and his lovely wife, Anita, brought cake and ice-cream to share with the beginners and Happy Hearts dancers. This video clip is from a couple of weeks earlier as I don’t have the one from that night. But you can see Colby in one of the front squares as the camera pans to them. We all hope we can be as active when we are 90! Colby and Anita also round dance and I think the social dance too. If this is the new 90… 👍

It was one of the coldest nights of January so far, blizzard conditions, driving not recommended on some highways; so why not hold a Beach Theme Square Dance?! Dress up in bright summer clothing, dance, laugh, make mistakes, laugh some more. And that is what we did.

How ironic that, last night, our Happy Hearts Square Dance theme was “Beach Night”, as Mother Nature decided to test us by throwing in a blizzard. Very little deters us Sask. Square Dancers, one out of town couple did leave early but two squares stayed the whole night and danced on, then stayed to enjoy the potluck lunch - mmmm. After the lunch, the Strasbourg dancers started out but turned back to stay in the city, but the Pilot Butte caller couple managed to make it home by following a semi. At one point even the semi driver could not see and slowed to a crawl, so that a 15 minute drive took closer to 25 minutes.
But braving the weather was well worth it, most dancers were dressed in bright coloured beach attire and our beginners joined us for the first dance; it was such a fun evening.
