Saying “just be more confident” could actually be worse than you think.
The child is struggling and it will almost always be impossible to just “be confident”. They are coming in feeling nervous, scared, maybe they are overthinking the skill they are trying to do, or maybe they are slowly falling out of love with something they enjoyed for a long time.
As parents, all we want is to see our little ones be confident and it can be hard when they are not.
So, be specific in what you say: “That was a great swing”, “I am proud of you for continuing to step in the box”, “your practice was amazing”, “you’re constantly improving,” “you made a great play at first base!” or even “I’m really proud of how hard you’re working”.
As a parent, focus on what they did well at and let the coaches focus on what they need to improve on.

Pushing ourselves and our children to do hard things creates more confidence. Children are able to see what they are capable of doing which then helps build resilience, determination, leadership skills, and life skills in general.
Without doing the difficult things, it is hard to know what we are capable of. Without being faced with hardship, it’s hard to understand our strengths. And if we don’t face small moments of challenge, it becomes very hard to work through big ones when they come (and we know that life will present hard moments).
