Bedford Junior Blues U15 boys opened their East Midlands League campaign with a 32–14 victory over Olney, but the final score only tells part of the story in this brilliantly fought contest.
Bedford opened strongly with tight game mgt, good possession and control of the territory.
With strong defense from the Olney line, Bedford’s pressure and patience paid off with some early tries and a penalty kick putting them firmly ahead on the board and seemingly in a winning position.
But then everything changed - Olney responded strongly with great breakdown play which succeeded in disrupting Bedford’s rhythm. The home side found themselves drawn away from their game plan that had served them so well early on, and with penalties and frustration beginning to mount, this allowed the momentum to swing back to the visitors. They made great use of it to land two well run converted tries.
Could Bedford ride the storm?
The home team were forced to regain their composure, dig deep, and absorb the pressure. They showed a different side to their game with the closing 10 minutes providing perhaps the clearest indication of their season potential.
Two well-constructed training-ground tries were executed with real precision and teamwork leading to a well fought first victory.
Olney played their part in a brilliantly competitive encounter and ensured a strong and tactical game of rugby all round.
Thanks to them, the excellent spectators, match officials and all for a great morning of quality rugby.
