PLEASE SHARE TO ANYONE GOING NEAR ANY BEACHES THIS YEAR!
Rip Currents are not something that only occur in Australia , they are extremely common around the coast of the U.K. and equally as dangerous .
The key is to be able to spot them .
The problem is , people make the grave mistake of looking at the waves and gravitating towards the area where the sea looks calmer .
This is a big no no .
Those calmer areas where the waves aren’t crashing ,isn’t a safe place for the kids to swim .
It looks it , but under the water the current is heading straight out to sea.
Things to look out for .
No waves , but the water may look
Choppy .
The water may appear darker .
Seaweed / foam moving away from the beach or a gap in seaweed washed up on the beach .
If you get caught in a rip current .
Stay calm.
Don’t try to swim directly back to the beach against the current. That’s what exhausts people.
Swim parallel to the shoreline until you’re out of the narrow current, then swim back in at an angle.
If you can’t escape, float or tread water, wave one arm, and call for help.
And never let kids use inflatables in the sea unless you have them tethered on a rope.
Better still , the inflatables for the pool .
Always take time to asses the sea state and look for rip currents .
