Tonight our 34Vs social squad begin their season preparations! This group, made up of players young and old, play hard but train easy. Fun and enjoyment are the name of the game and their pre-season training gets underway tonight at the Davey Field. Everyone welcome whether you’re moving clubs, fancy getting back into the game or have never picked up a ball before.

It is with great sadness that we share the sudden passing of Alex Greenberg, aged just 38.

Alex joined Shelford as an U13, touring Heidelberg, Italy, and Canada, before graduating into senior rugby with the Nomads—where his flowing locks earned him the nickname ‘MMMbop’.

While he started out more enthusiastic than skilful (we’ll gloss over a his quick-tap penalty knock-on against Treviso), no player worked harder. Between 15 and 17, Alex transformed himself into a formidable, fearless flanker who would tackle anything that moved, quickly becoming one of our standout age-group players. Later, despite head and shoulder injuries, he reinvented himself as a sharp fullback who ran the ball back with real intent.

Off the pitch, Alex was universally liked, entirely his own man, and incredibly intelligent, as his doctorate and stellar academic career proved. He was a brilliant teammate, and we were lucky to have him at our club.

His funeral will be held in Oxford at 11am on Wednesday 5th August, the club will share further details as we have them.
