We’re continuing our dive into jazz pianists in our weekly classes and this week, Level 1 are learning about Count Basie 🎶 🎹

Basie got his first taste for performing while working at the Palace Theatre - one day, the theatre’s pianist didn’t show up for work and the eager Basie offered to fill in. Despite being told no, he snuck into the orchestra pit and began to play along - he was invited back to perform that very evening! 🎶

Leading his big band for over five decades, Basie cemented himself as one of the titans of swing, helping to fuse jazz and blues with his Kansas City sound. Next time you’re listening to him, listen out for his minimalist, sparse approach to piano - I love how he uses silence and just a few notes to create maximum rhythmical impact! 🙌

This month in classes, we’re spotlighting jazz pianists and next up at Level 2 we’ve got the legendary Earl “Fatha” Hines 🎶 🎹

Earl “Fatha” Hines is often thought to be one of the fathers of modern piano - Basie even referred to him as “the greatest piano player in the world.”

His early work led him to record with Louis Armstrong’s Hot Five, where you’ll hear him on classic tracks like “Basin Street Blues” and “West End Blues.” His work as a bandleader in the 1930s and 40s created a musical playground that kicked off the careers of vocalists like Sarah Vaughan and Billy Eckstein, as well as providing a breeding ground for the evolution of bebop, nurturing artists like Charlie Parker and Dizzy GIllespie.
