Adaptive teaching part 31: why is my neurodivergent pupil so forgetful?

This is the story of a former pupil of mine who we will call Sarah. She was paid a compliment by a music teacher but by the time she repeated it to her favourite TA she had remembered the sentiment but forgotten key details. Will hilarious consequences!

This illustrates Sarah’s working memory issues perfectly. I also share what the music teacher could have done differently.

If you’d like to know more about supporting executive function such as working memory, I cover this in my adaptive teaching bundle.

Here’s what I learnt during 7 days without social media social media, television or news.

I have been chronically online for 4 years. It’s certainly been close to addiction at points. I tell myself I need to do it to promote my business but, as this week has proven, the sky will not fall in if I schedule my posts and step back for a week.

Thank to everyone who supported me in this digital detox. Especially my family.

I’m back now but need to remember the important things in life.

Dyslexia part 17: Such a love of words! Such a fear of writing them down.

I knew I had at least one book in my head since I was a child. I had so many ideas but could never express them in writing.

I took me until mid way through secondary school before I could write in coherent sentences and paragraphs. Even then my spelling was atrocious! I’ll never really understand vowels in English.

When I started Neuroteachers I began writing blogs. I popped one up on Twitter one day and that’s when I got approached by .

I was astounded that I thought I could make one of my blogs “ Don’t ditch differentiation!” Into a book.

Thus the Other 29 was born. It’s a practical guide to how supporting neurodivergent children like me can help teaching and learning for neurotypical peers.

It’s the perfect Summer read for teachers and TAs and it’s available for 20 percent off now.

Adaptive teaching part 31: when I first started teaching I used to think that sitting children by ability was a good ideas.

It was the prevailing wisdom at the time.
I soon discovered it was actually limiting and divisive for the children. Here’s why. Share your experiences.

ADHD part 27: I have so many ideas! All the time and they are all brilliant and exciting… but I can’t start any of them until the conditions are perfect. And then I get hyper focused a d can’t stop what I’m doing for days. That’s how I wrote my book.

Neurotypical people keep telling to be disciplined and write for 30 minutes a day.

30 minutes? That’s barely enough time to get snacks and drinks!

In the end I booked into Premier Inn as it had a sale ( other brands are available but it is very ND friendly). Stayed for 5 days and wrote the last 7 chapters and conclusion.

So the book took me 2 years to write. But really it was only 5 days.

Speaking of the book the second print run is now available and there’s a sale on to get you 20 percent off!

The Other 29; how supporting your neurodivergent pupil can improve teaching and learning for the whole class.
