Who do you draw your inspiration from?

I’m blessed to be in a position where I get to work alongside so many individuals I find genuinely inspirational.

This post is about someone who has inspired me lately.

Enter Lisa.

I’ve coached Lisa for a long time now, and I’ve seen many different versions of this little individual with a lot of determination.

Lisa has only just returned to training after undergoing surgery. She's now in her second week of what will be a long, slow recovery process – something she's all too aware of.

And that's the bit that gets me.

Long before her operation, she knew that getting back to her former self was going to be a long, hard slog. But rather than let that deter her, she used it as fuel. She didn't use her circumstances as an excuse to hide behind; she used them as motivation to push forward.

Lisa understood that the fitness and strength she built prior to surgery could make a massive difference to her recovery.

And the run-up to that surgery was anything but plain sailing.

She was in constant pain, struggling massively with her mood and overall energy levels, but not once did she let that beat her.

This little ball of (sometimes) controlled aggression knuckled down and grafted through some seriously difficult times to give herself the best possible chance of bouncing back.

Which brings me to this awesome mugshot.

Captured just after she'd finished running 3km.

To some, that might be "only 3km". But if you'd witnessed the effort, grit and determination Lisa has put in to get herself back to running that distance already, you'd understand that it's so much more than that.

It's not just 3km. It's the start of a whole new chapter.

What a Sunday morning this has been!

The fact that I got to Gelt Woods at 3:45am and there were already folk there, raring to go for a 4am start, is incredible.

To top that off, we got back to the car park at the end of the 4am loop and there was another group waiting for us. The same happened again at the end of the 5am and 6am loop.

One of the things I really enjoy is hearing the difference in how people talk and seeing the shift in their mentality between arriving and completing their first loop.

Quite often, before that first loop, there’s a bit of apprehension. The reasons why their performance might be below par are freely circulating, and a disrupted night’s sleep often gets a mention.

Fast forward to the end of the first loop and suddenly everyone’s bursting with energy. The laughter is flowing, and many are saying how glad they are that they made the effort to get out of bed and get their body moving.

It’s mornings like this that really highlight how powerful exercise can be as medicine.

Thank you to everyone who came down this morning. I had such a good time running alongside you.

I appreciate you all 🙏

I've coached for a good few years now, and during that time we've developed a really good friendship alongside the coaching relationship.

Sarah is the perfect example when it comes to goal setting. She sets a very high bar for herself and will absolutely knock her pan in to make sure that bar is achieved.

Sarah ran the Cumbrian Run at the weekend and set a PB — well done! 🏃🏼‍♀️👌🏽

It was far from the ideal training block due to an insanely busy work schedule, but Sarah still turned up and did her best, as she always does.

Sarah's goal for this week is simple: chill out, flop about, reduce fatigue and get her mind ready to hit the next block.

The marathon in April is the primary focus going forward but we've got a few other events along the way to get dialled in for, this is what goal setting looks like:
Hyrox in March, Hyrox in January, Adult PE Day 3 in November.

One big longer term goal with lots of feeder goals along the way 👌🏽

We've got a big strength block coming up to make sure Sarah is even stronger and her joints are even more durable before we get into marathon preparation.

The first thing Sarah did when I told her we were lowering her running volume in favour of strength was ask why.

This is one of the many reasons Sarah is a dream to coach.

She doesn't just trust the process — she fully understands every step of it.

A sneak peak into the blood, sweet, profanities, and tears required to make these videos.

You ever struggle with a fat-loss/dieting phase?

Me too, more times than I care to admit.

It's made even more annoying by phrases like:

"Eat less and move more."

Losing fat is hard. The complications of life make it even harder.

I think fat-loss phases are something that should only be done when the time is right. Otherwise, you're just setting yourself up for failure.

If you aren't in a position to achieve the goal, then it doesn't make sense to be chasing it. This is where maintenance comes in.

Maintenance phases are extremely important.

They're simply nice periods of time where you're still conscious of what's going in, but you aren't directly working towards the end goal. You're side-stepping until life calms down a bit and you're in a position to get back on the proverbial horse.

You can run maintenance phases for as long as needed. That's the entire point.

The goal isn't to lose or gain; it's simply to hold steady and reduce stress and pressure.

Dieting is hard. Don't make it even harder by trying to white-knuckle your way through the difficult times.

Take your foot off the gas. Come back to it when the time is right.

You, just like everyone else, are hard-wired to notice the negative things.

That's not a defect; it's a survival mechanism, and it's one that once served us well.

The problem with that negativity bias in today's world is that news outlets and social media use it to hijack your thoughts and attention.

The bad news is that you can't eradicate it.

The good news is that you can become someone who sees more of the positives in life, of which there are many.

Next time you see something nice or positive, make sure you spend time engaging with it. Don't just see it and move on with your day; actually spend time with it.

After enough practice, this skill will become habitual, and hopefully, all your days will contain more positives as a result.

The world is a wonderful place if you're willing to put the effort into noticing it.

You know what really boils my urine*?

(*avoiding profanities because it reduces your reach. There are some subtitle changes, as a result😂)

You know I love encouraging others — and myself — to do the hard thing, but you’ve got to remember that doing the hard thing is relative to you.

Your perception of what’s hard for someone else is completely irrelevant to you. The only thing that matters is that it’s hard for you.

If that means running 1km (or any distance whatsoever) is an effort for you, then celebrate it for what it is: a win and a box ticked in favour of someone who does the hard thing.

Let’s say you get up ten minutes early to get some extra movement in, and you choose to walk. That’s awesome! Because you still chose the harder thing. Staying in bed would’ve been much easier, but you didn’t.

There are plenty of folk who will miserably sit around and judge your efforts and accomplishments. Let them.

The only thing that matters is that you recognise your accomplishments for what they are.

They’re a win.

And a win deserves a well done👏🏼 👏🏼

This is my favourite picture of Cara. It perfectly highlights who Cara is: an incredible individual with an unlimited capacity for optimism, always seeing the good in the world, and just being an awesome human.

It was our anniversary recently, something which both of us have always been useless at, which is something I’m appreciative of, because Cara and I do this weird thing where we’re supportive, loving and caring towards each other year-round, not just on the “special occasions”.

I was having a conversation with someone recently about how I ended up becoming a coach – if you’ve known me for even a short while, then chances are you know this story because I love telling it.

I had just got a new job that paid really well. I thought that when I started and money was no longer an issue, life would be hunky-dory. I was wrong. I came back after my first shift and Cara asked me how it had gone. Long story short, this new job wasn’t for me.

At the time, I had been training for a little while. I had also helped a few friends out with their training and I really enjoyed that.

This is where one of Cara’s strengths comes in – Cara doesn’t see problems the same way I do. She’s an extremely solution-focused individual, which stems from how amazing she is at problem-solving.

Cara’s solution?

Turn the hobby you enjoy into a career.

The problem wasn’t the idea. As always, it was a good one. The problem was me worrying too much about finances, life, whether I was good enough to make it work as a career, etc.

After more convincing than you would think, I decided to run with Cara’s solution. While I was working shifts, I was also working my way through the qualification. 95% of that wouldn’t have happened the way it did if it wasn’t for Cara’s endless help and support.

I have a career I love, working with so many folk I genuinely love working with. I rarely have a bad day at work – I genuinely can’t remember the last time I did. Currently, things are going from strength to strength.

I currently work with the best group of people I ever have, I spend my free time alongside some of those awesome folk I coach and many more awesome individuals, and I’m currently in the middle of so many awesome opportunities for the future.

And this is where I get to the point of this post. I say this regularly, and I genuinely can’t stress it enough – the people you surround yourself with will affect your life trajectory. That effect can be good or bad.

I’m going to finish with this:

A friend asked me many years ago if I ever get bored being with the same person. My answer was:

“No. If you’re around the right people, you’re forever growing and changing. I’m never with the same person. I’ve known a thousand versions of Cara, and I hope I get to know ten thousand more.”
