Dr. Vonda Wright is a world-renowned orthopedic surgeon, longevity researcher, and author of the New York Times bestseller Unbreakable. She has treated over 100,000 patients and authored 44 research studies on aging and physical health.

You CAN be healthy at any size. You CANNOT be healthy at any body composition.

The idea that you can be healthy at any size is not entirely wrong. Weight and BMI are genuinely poor predictors of metabolic health.

But there is a harder truth buried underneath that nobody else is sharing: you CANNOT be healthy at every body composition.

Your body composition is the ratio of fat mass to muscle mass. It is what your metabolism ACTUALLY responds to. Skeletal muscle handles up to 80% of insulin-stimulated glucose disposal in your body. When fat mass rises and muscle mass declines, even with no (apparent) change on the scale, your cells lose their primary tool for managing blood sugar. Insulin resistance rises silently with it.

Research on the ‘metabolically obese, normal-weight’ phenotype confirms that individuals with normal BMI but high fat mass and low muscle mass carry MULTIPLE cardiometabolic risk factors...including insulin resistance...despite appearing lean.
