Which Aikido principles are relevant for Karate-ka?
Quite a few, it turns out... and vice versa.

This was the theme of the seminar this weekend in Dumfries, hosted by Seishin Shotokan Karate Club.

We explored principles of Ma-ai (distance), Hara (centre), Kime (direction & intent) and Zanshin (awareness), using bokken and tanto to go beyond empty hand.

Super interesting to see how coming off the line of attack with body position, blending and circular motion can destabilise an attacker, for both Aikido-ka and Karate-ka alike!

Coming up next Nov 2nd in Dumfries, a seminar on Aikido for Karate.

Although outwardly different martial arts, they both share the same budo foundation - the martial way.

This seminar will cover the main principles of Aikido, exploring blending, circular motion, centering and non-resistance, and how they can add to Karate practice.

We’ll also cover Aikido weapons.

Open to all. Bring an open mind.

Aikido classes at Drummond Community High School are well underway.

Come join us Wednesdays, 7-9pm for Beginners class, followed by Weapons and more advanced techniques.
