What does “progressive overload” actually mean?
It sounds technical, but the principle is simple: if you want to get stronger, you need to gradually challenge your body more.
You might begin an exercise with a 2.5kg weight. Once you can perform the movement confidently and that weight is no longer challenging enough, you might progress to 5kg, then 7kg and beyond.
It’s not about picking up the heaviest weight.
It’s about building up gradually, with good technique, as your strength improves.
At Beyond 50, we use progressive overload to help you keep moving forward rather than simply repeating the same workout.
