YOU DON’T NEED TO BE CALM ALL THE TIME.

In fact, being regulated doesn’t mean feeling calm all the time.

One of the questions I was asked during a recent podcast interview was:

“What does being in control of your own body actually look like?”

My answer...

It’s not about being calm.

Before a presentation, a sporting event, an exam or any challenge that matters to us, we often need that surge of adrenaline and energy to perform.

A racing heart.
Butterflies in your stomach.
Sweaty palms.

These aren’t signs that something is wrong.

There are signs that you’re human.

The problem comes when we don’t understand what’s happening in our body.

When we understand our nervous system, we learn to recognise when we need to SWITCH ON and when we need to SWITCH OFF.

Too much time spent switching on?
Stress, overwhelm and eventually burnout.

Too much time switched off?
Disengagement, low motivation and low mood.

The goal isn’t to stay calm all the time.

The goal is learning how to move between states and having the tools to influence your state when you need to.

This understanding is at the heart of the work I do in schools with both teachers and students.

Glasgow April 2016

This was me presenting at the OM YOGA show a class for TEENS & pre-teens.

This was the year we lunched our 60hr TEEN - Mind & Body Yoga Teacher Training after the success of our 50hr Alignment Based 8-12yr Yoga Teacher training.

Our next TEEN course is in AUGUST ‘26. There are a couple of places left.

PROPRIOCEPTION - the ability to be aware of your position , movement and force in space!

It is amazing how many people don’t have body awareness. It’s our ability to develop proprioception that develops not only our body but our brain and this ‘felt sense’ can diminish with age and less movement - this is what we need to move!

It’s never more important than with back bending - as we can’t see this are many people struggle with awareness of what we’re meant to feel or how to work this area safely and efficiently.

Props are a great way of giving feedback and developing a strong, safe back binding practice which will keep your spine and your brain supple!

YOGA DOWEL

This week we have been working with the Yoga Dowel!

This 6 ft pole is amazing to help work a little stronger, with more awareness, not only so you don’t hit fellow students but also by helping build deeper proprioception (awareness of your body in space).

Here we are rotating our truck (doing a twist), however the connection of the heel of your hand to the pole allows greater awareness and movement of the shoulder blades to facilitate greater rotation.
Grounding out buttocks to the wall helps lengthen our spine and provide awareness of imbalance in our own body.

The Yoga Dowel is an incredible tool for all postures, including inversions.

This week we have focusing on our standings and seated postures.

Here we highlight some forward bends with twists.

The 6ft pole allows for deeper connection in particular the connection to the shoulder blades ans opening of our chest.

This in turn creates deeper grounding of the buttock bones, resulting in greater spinal extension.

Forward bending and twist becomes stronger and easier with The Dowel.

Our studio is not run on a membership basis. You can book a drop in slot or a block of 6 classes.

All classes are run by Senior Yoga Instructor & Teacher Trainer who has been teaching for 26 years!

PROP of the WEEK!

This week we’re using the Yoga Chair (a weighted chair that allows us to move safely on and off!)

All props are just tools for proprioception.

Of course there are times when the chair can act as scaffold to allows us to perform movement when we need a crutch to help us.

The reasons could be injury, aging, hyper mobility to name just a few BUT ultimately we make new neutral connections sending signals from brain to body (and vice versa) to connect……..proprioception 💗

The video shows how the chair can ENHANCE awareness and movement in the body.
