Honest question. How many women have you actually seen do a full range, straight arm, unassisted chin-up in your gym?

Here’s 28 different women doing them in the last 24 hours at The Training Academy. At least 8 more weren’t in yesterday. Another 10 people should have them by the end of the year.

Is there another gym in Glasgow that keeps producing these sort of results on one of the hardest upper-body movements there is? I haven't seen it if there is .

None of the women in this video could do a chin-up when they started. They have jobs, families, busy lives. Most train two strength sessions a week. They don’t live in the gym. When they first started out, a common statement is "I have no upper body strength"

This is what strength training progress is supposed to look like. Clear, measurable strength gains. Results like this represents consistent hard work, smart work and showing up even when it was easier to stay at home.

Real progress like this can't be achieved quickly or by using social media filters. Good lighting and a before and after picture will not make it any easier to pull yourself up to the bar.

Do we do lots of other exercises besides chin ups? Of course we do!!

But the fact we have so many women doing chin ups shows that we have a programme that is delivering results like nowhere else. And this is the actual evidence of it.

If you’re working hard and still not getting stronger, it’s usually not for a lack of effort. It’s a lack of direction, accountability, and a plan that actually progresses.

13 years married to this beautiful woman 😍 !! 13 years ago feels like two lifetimes ago never mind one. In other ways it is no time at all.

In all that time we've both grown as people together in different ways.  I think we both feel that with every passing year you see things from a slightly different view and also start to reflect more on things even longer than 13 years. You go through life. You reflect, learn , change and grow. You recall things you hadn't ever recalled before. You learn more about yourself and each other.

Our life today looks very different to what it did 13 years ago. Raising 5 children is relentless,  rewarding , happy and tiring all in equal measure. But the good massively outweighs the hard. As life goes on you also learn who is there beside you to help you through it all .

Life is harder but much richer than our wedding day 13 years ago.

Lace is used to symbolise 13 years married and it seems appropriate. I read that it represents the delicate but strong intricacies of an entwined bond that recognises both challenges and successes of a long lasting marriage.

When I think back,  During weddings and other life celebrations, many people show up to celebrate with you. Friends and family. When times are good it's easy for people to show up and share in the fun and the laughter.

But as life goes on, you also realise that your true people  are the ones that show up beside you during the darker harder times . That's when you learn what was superficial and what wasn't. I read a quote recently that said;

"in prosperity , our friends and family know us. In adversity, we know our friends and family."

It's something that we have both learned these last 13 years and is so very true.

I feel so blessed to have been given the life I have thanks to Kathleen.  And in some ways feel like it's just the beginning of the next chapter. 🙏 "One day we're gonna get so high "❤️

Zone two and The 80/20 rule wasn’t written for people who run 3 -5 hours a week.

It came from elites doing 12–20 hours in their prime. The “easy” 80% only exists because the other 20% is intense.

A beginner can’t even stay in Zone 2 without compromising their running stride.

Despite what social media tells you, burning fat during exercise does not mean losing fat. Zone two does not have a magical fat loss property nor does it have something special about it that will manage hormones and bring down stress.

Exercise in general can combat stress and make you feel good but there's nothing uniquely special about "Zone two" for stress and improving or balancing hormones.

And VO2max (one thing that actually predicts longevity) responds better to hard work than obsession over a a heart-rate zone

Conversational pace still matters.

Swipe through. Then go run. And consider  leaving the watch at home! The run still counts! I dare you!!

If I had to pick one obvious gap in the fitness strength space in gyms and by coaches it is the continued use of resistance bands when doing pull ups and chin ups. You are not going to get great results using them. Nobody is.

Using them is often down to a lack of experience and one thing I definitely think can be improved on because a chin up is one of the most achievable satisfying things to be able to attain and is a reflection of potentially years of hard work , dedication and attention to lifestyle outside of the gym too. 💪 There are a few reasons why so few people can do them but not understanding or seeing a clear pathway of progress and believing you won't ever be able to do them is a big part of that.

In the last 2 years at The Training Academy, I have watched approximately 60 women from not being able to do a single rep to doing multiple reps. A lot of men too and there is now a growing number of both men and women moving towards weighted chin ups too.

That is not a fluke or accidental. It's a system and evidence of widespread results.

In the caption, I mention something called the strength gap. I understand it's not very clear what that is from just reading the slides and can maybe be confusing but basically, your muscles are stronger in the eccentric phase of movement than they are in the concentric phase. They are approximately 40% stronger. This means you can allocate a ratio or decimal to it. We will call it 1.4. The strength gap between eccentric and concentric for women is slightly higher. 1.47 approximate average. So women can lift more and do more weight on the eccentric phase of a lot of movements. Therefore this is where they should spend a decent amount of time training, especially with chin ups since the concentric part of a fixed weight and yoi can't alter it( your bodyweight)

Interestingly, the strength gap for older adults (+60) is even greater. 1.6. meaning they should stand to benefit even more so from eccentric focused efforts.

I hope this makes sense and helps. Ditch the resistance bands. they are not a worthwhile inclusion for chin up and pull ups. 💪
