Nathan Walmsley’s Penwortham 1st XI travelled to Hall Lane to face struggling Great Eccleston as they looked to make it three wins in a row in Northern League Division Two.

Bluey buff Nathan called correctly at the toss and inserted the hosts, who responded by making 213/7 from their 50 overs, Mohammed Fazil (53) raising his bat and being ably supported by skipper, Joe McMillan, who made 40.

Connor Brown, on his last PCC appearance in 2026 and fresh from signing on for one more year, led the way with the ball, taking 3-48. Nathan also bagged three victims, finishing with 3-57 from his 15.

In riposte, Penwortham slipped to 13/2 and 62/3 when Jonny Hothersall perished for a hard fought 19 before the fourth-wicket partnership of 130 decided the match in the 1st XI’s favour.

Connor showed his class with willow in hand to ensure he leaves on a high, a superb unbeaten 85 (twelve 4s) in tandem with Matt Halliday, who continued in his rich vein of form with a destructive 76 off 62 (eleven 4s and two 6s).

When Matt fell with 22 remaining for victory, Loughborough-bound, Charlie Evans (12*) saw the job through with Connor, sealing a third consecutive win which sees Penwortham climb into the top half of the table.

Withnell Fold 1st XI were the visitors to Middleforth Green on Saturday to face Mathew Walmsley’s Penwortham 2nd XI.

After winning the toss, Mathew opted to bat first but must’ve soon been regretting that decision, his charges folding to 29/7 and 42/8, Rizwan Ali (4-12) and Imran Zanghar (4-45) doing the damage for the visitors.

Mathew made a dogged 30 alongside Adam Thomas Salisbury, who top-scored with 35 in a gritty stand of 68, to haul the 2nd XI up to 123 all out.

The Fold openers put on 52 for the first wicket before Demeter descendant, Ashley Billington (2-63) removed Zakirhusen Momla for 37.

Two quick wickets for Declan Jones (2-22) gave Penwortham hope as the visitors slipped to 56/3 before Imran Zanghar (35) and Asif Bhojani (26) helped high-flying Fold secure a five-wicket win.

It was derby day at Fortress Limbrick as Penwortham 3rd XI welcomed Vernon Carus 2nd XI, Daschund devotee Steve Lodge taking the captaincy.

Visiting skipper, Paul Chapman Jr elected to bowl first after calling correctly and saw his attack, led by AB Bhatti (4-29) and Max Livesey (3-21) dismiss the 3rd XI for 90, despite a battling 30 from Stanley Keller at the top of the order.

The men from Factory Lane chased their target down for the loss of two wickets, an opening stand of 54 between Mahroz Gull (25) and former Mayor of Penwortham, Will Adams refusing to leave office before the job was complete, finishing on 43* alongside Dan Cairns, who hit a quickfire 21.

Molineux maniac, George Bowdler (1-17) and Harry Ferson (1-30) were the successful Penwortham bowlers.

Stuart Bowdler captained Penwortham 4th XI as they welcomed St Annes 3rd XI to Penwortham Priory Academy, and after winning the toss, Stuart opted to wield the willow.

It proved an inspired decision, the Hill brothers having eyes for runs with George striking 30 and Edwin, an excellent career- best 60 to lay a strong foundation for the carnage to follow.

Player of the week, Will Jackson strode to the crease once George had been dismissed and proceeded to dismantle the visiting bowling attack, dispatching them to all parts of the ground as he hammered a magnificent 151*, as the 4th XI piled up 294/3 from their 40 overs.

Faced with a daunting total, ‘keeper-batsmen, Chamika De Zoysa struck 42 but the Penwortham attack held sway, youngsters, Harry Caney (3-70) and Finlay McGrath (2-19) in the wickets.

Iain Malone then bugged the St Annes’ tail into submission, taking 3-7 as the visitors were all out for 141 as the 4th XI claimed an emphatic 153-run win.

Sara Bowdler’s Women’s team were in Super 8 finals day action at Longridge on Sunday as they faced Westmorland League outfit, Sedgwick.

Skipper Sara opted to field first at the Newsham Memorial Ground with Sedgwick posting 98/2 for a net score of 143, Amy Dalzell hitting 32 and Captain Meg Lewis chipping in with 20. Lucy Alexander (1-23 off 5) and Grace Crowther (1-26 off 4) impressed with ball in hand.

Penwortham fell short in the chase, finishing on 85/9 for a net score of 95, Lucy continuing her fine outing with 22 and Darrellyn Garner making 16 at the top of the order as Sedgwick progressed thanks to tight bowling, particularly from Holly Johnson (3-22 off 5).

The weekend was rounded off with a crucial fixture at Middleforth Green as Penwortham Sunday XI hosted Whittingham and Goosnargh, Rayyan Tailor’s side aiming to preserve Division One status.

The visitors decided to bat first, physicist and mercurial spinner, Mihir Parekh finding the perfect formula early on to claim two wickets in the first over, in an eight over burst of 4-28 as Whittingham were reduced to 58/4 when Zuber Palejwala fell for 26.

Jamil Nuniya led the recovery with an entertaining 59 off 50 but the introduction of numbers man, Isaac Roberts (3-9) proved crucial to limit the score to 185.

The Penwortham response was on shaky ground at 30/3 but a stand of 84 between Stanley Keller, who made a measured 45 and Sunday superstar, Charlie Evans put Penwortham back in the driving seat.

Charlie saw the job through as Penwortham claimed a vital twelve points, notching his second consecutive Sunday XI ton, hitting the winning runs to finish on exactly 100* alongside Aniket Sen, who ended 24*.

We are delighted to announce that Connor Brown has agreed to rejoin Penwortham Cricket Club as our Overseas Amateur and Head Coach for the 2027 season.

Connor has been instrumental in the 1st XI over the last couple of months, showing a fantastic desire to improve everyone around him through his hard work in training and consistent performances on a Saturday.

The all-rounder has made a big impact on the field, averaging 31 with the bat, including a highest score of 85 not out in Saturday’s win away at Great Eccleston. He has also taken 16 wickets at an average of 23 in a small sample size this summer. We have no doubt that, over a full season in 2027, Connor will play a major role in taking the club forward.
