Lengthening
One of the key benefits of pilates is the way you elongate your limbs and all all your muscles, oftentimes against gravity. Stretching out from a strong centre gives strength through the full range of movement and lots of elasticity in your muscles. The @willow_pilates approach is to coax your body to find its full potential and to really hone your limbs to eliminate baggy knees and saggy elbows. This is energising and creates a feeling of freedom in your body.

We often have a bit of a giggle in class when adding in layers to movement. In this picture, Iโ€™m rolling back and doing arm openings simultaneously. Working on more than one thing at a time can be surprisingly challenging but itโ€™s so good for your brain to multitask. With some perseverance, the quality of each move can be maintained no matter how many combinations we add together. Thatโ€™s coordination!

Upper Body Strength
Many people, myself included start pilates with very little upper body strength due to an accident or more commonly due to hunched shoulders due to stress or computer work, over-working with weights or poor posture which makes the upper body unbalanced or weak. Oftentimes, the wrists react very badly to having any weight put through them and moves like the side plank shown in the picture seem an impossible mountain ๐Ÿ” to climb. The @willow_pilates approach is to relax all the tension, free the upper back and gradually build up to being strong in the wrists and upper back and shoulders. Getting aligned in the right position also helps as you find the balance to hold challenging positions with ease. Many people are amazed at what they can do from their starting point with some perseverance and guidance . ๐Ÿง˜โ€โ™€๏ธ๐Ÿง˜โ€โ™‚๏ธ

Monday night is Menโ€™s night at @willow_pilates ! We run specialised menโ€™s classes to target areas men need to work on: balancing out strength with endurance, range of movement and flexibility. We kick ๐Ÿฆต the global muscles ๐Ÿ’ช into touch and get the postural muscles doing their role better. Itโ€™s fun and surprisingly challenging and we add in some relaxation, coordination, breathing and flow. Often men turn to pilates because of an injury, maybe sport or work related, but stick with it because it makes sense and they enjoy it. My kids and teens classes include boys and we have good fun during the sessions. It is helpful for posture, stretching, coordination, balance and relaxation. Kids bones ๐Ÿฆด grow faster than their muscles ๐Ÿ’ช and pilates helps deal with this. Iโ€™ve enjoyed teaching boys and girls at Cubs and Scouts recently and helped them earn their badges and was really impressed with how enthusiastic they were. I even got a B.R.A.V.O. ๐Ÿ‘

Upper Back
The middle part of the back between the lumbar spine and the neck is the thoracic spine. The ribs and shoulder blades are in this area with your lungs ๐Ÿซ and diaphragm.
It can get very tight from all of our usual everyday activities like typing, driving, cooking, eating etc. We sit a lot for work or schoolwork and lots of people get tightness in their mid backs as a result with stress or repetitive activities. At Willow Pilates we carefully stretch and release this area. Itโ€™s relaxing and enjoyable and is the first step to being able to maintain a good posture and a strong spine ๐Ÿฆด ๐Ÿง˜โ€โ™‚๏ธ๐Ÿง˜โ€โ™€๏ธ

Progression
Pilates is like Jenga blocks, one piece at the base is unstable and everything wobbles elsewhere. At Willow Pilates we take the time to work through pelvic tilts (see day 8) through to full spinal flexion with bells on! ๐Ÿ”” In this picture weโ€™re doing shoulder bridge with a straight leg ๐Ÿฆต lift. Weโ€™ve progressed from a full base of support to a single leg base of support ๐Ÿ”” the move is unilateral so the challenge to stay level and strong is increased ๐Ÿ”” Weโ€™ve adding in coordinating moving a limb whilst stabilising the spine in a bridge ๐Ÿ”” Were progressing to a straight leg lift from either a heel lift or a bent knee lift ๐Ÿ”” Lots going on! Thereโ€™s still work to be done to get it all perfect but you never get bored with pilates, thereโ€™s always another way to make it more challenging ๐Ÿ”” Equally the progress is steady to make sure youโ€™re taking care of your spine ๐Ÿฆด
