Fishing Report: Monday 27th June 2022

Last week was another mixed week with some really scorching weather proving to be too hot for all but a couple of anglers who, despite the weather, still managed a few to the net. The cooler days saw far more activity with dries and nymphs continuing to work well.

Damsels are everywhere at the moment and the buzzers have now been joined by some very healthy hatches of caddis. The mornings and evenings continue to be the best time of day to have a cast with anglers taking advantage of the new gates to fish on late into the evening.

This week looks a little cooler, both during the days and at night, so the fishery will continue to stay open but catch and release will remain suspended. We are closely monitoring the water temperatures and will try and stay open for anglers for as long as possible. Please keep up to date via our page, the shop or our website.

Fishing Report: Monday 20th June 2022

A very warm week of scorching daytime temperatures of up to 31 degrees, coupled with overnight lows that were still into double figures has raised the lake temperature considerably.

Despite the conditions plenty of fish have still been on the move and are happy to take insects from the surface. Buzzers and damsels continue to hatch in large quantities and fishing with imitative patterns have had the best results. Long leaders with buzzers, damsels, crunchers and Diawl Bachs have worked well with a slow figure of eight retrieve.

Early morning and evenings have proven to be the best part of the day with anglers finding it more difficult during the hottest parts of the day.

With the water temperatures rising and, in the interest of the welfare of the fish, catch and release has now ceased. Please keep up to date on the fishery either via our website or by calling the store on 0118 930 3860.

13/06/2022

Fishing Report: Monday 13th June 2022

Last week was another largely warm one, but we did at times have a rather chilly wind alongside. Water temperatures have remained steady with no further rises this week and, with that, the fish have stayed happy and feeding heavily on naturals.

Buzzers continue to hatch along with the damsels which are now starting to come off in bigger numbers and will continue to get larger over the next few weeks, especially with the forecast ahead.

Floating lines and long leaders have worked well and plenty of success has come to the dry fly with shuttlecocks and Bob's Bits doing well.

Please make sure that, if you are fishing on very sunny days, you put plenty of sun protection on as several visiting anglers this week were visibly burnt! Evening fishing will really come into its own so don’t forget that the fishery is now open until dusk as long as you purchase a ticket from the shop before 5.30pm.

06/06/2022

Fishing Report: Monday 6th June 2022

Well sadly the mayfly madness has now been and gone, but the damsel hatch is now starting to kick off. There's still been plenty of surface activity with clouds of buzzers still coming off.

Nymphs have still been the go-to method with floating lines and sink tips, long leaders and super slow retrieves. Crunchers, Diawl Bachs, PTNs, Blue Flash Damsels and Cormorants have taken the majority of fish, with a few falling to shuttlecock buzzers and Shipman’s off the top.

Water temperatures are creeping up, but so far it hasn’t had an adverse effect on the fishing. Evening tickets have been popular and have heralded some great fishing especially at the end of hot and bright days.

Fishing Report: Monday 30th May

Last week was another strong week for visiting anglers with so many flies hatching off the lake. It was hard to decide what fly to tie on! This led to lots of surface activity with plenty of free-rising fish throughout the days and into the evenings. It could well be that, after such an early start this year, the mayfly are past their peak already, but lots of buzzer activity (and now damsels) has certainly taken up the slack.

Long line nymphing and static buzzers have been great methods, along with shuttlecock buzzers and mayfly dries for those willing to persevere. The water temperatures have remained steady in the mid-teens and have had no adverse effect on the sport, so let's hope it continues for as long as possible.

We'd like to share a reminder that the shop will be open this Thursday and Friday from 10am-4pm with the fishery being open from 10-dusk each day. If you want to fish on into the evening, please make sure that you purchase your tickets before the store closes.

Another little request to our anglers that are keen to get in early: Please don’t block the gates in the morning. The quicker our staff can get in, the quicker you can get fishing!

We look forward to seeing you this bank holiday weekend!

Fishing Report: Monday 9th May

Last week was another beautiful one for the weather with the early part of the week seeing warm temperatures and lovely overcast conditions. Lots of flies were hatching all over the lake with a mixture of buzzers, olives, the odd very early daddy longlegs, with a couple of mayflies thrown in for good measure. Nymphs and dry fly have remained the best methods of attack for anglers with the natural approach being rewarded with some great bags of pristine hard-fighting fish.

As the week progressed, high temperatures and lots of sun didn’t put the fish off but did push them down a little during the brightest parts of the day. Early mornings and evenings have the best of the activity with some real lumps sipping down insects.

Saturday saw us host a private club booking for the London-based City Flickers who had a fantastic day with some of their new members catching their very first trout on fly. Well done to all that took part!

Our electric gates have now been fitted which means that anglers will be able to fish on after the shop has closed and leave the car park via the automatic opening gate. Please make sure that if you want to take advantage of the evening tickets that you have them purchased from the store before 5.30pm.

06/05/2022

REMINDER: The fishery is closed to the public tomorrow, Sat 7th May, for a private club booking, but the tackle shop will remain open.

We hope to see our regular anglers again next week. 🎣

25/04/2022

Fishing Report: 25th April 2022

Last week was another warm and relatively settled week and we continued to see large hatches throughout most days. Clouds of buzzers littered the sky all around the lake and the fish were certainly making the most of it. Floating lines and midge tips worked best depending on the amount of cloud cover at the time. When the cover disappeared the fished moved down, so be ready to adjust your depth accordingly. Traditional buzzer patterns, Diawl Bachs and crunchers all worked well with a few fish also falling to lures.

Will Parkes returned again and had another great day on the buzzers landing around 10 fish up to 5lbs. Our new electric gates will be getting fitted over the coming week and, once complete, will allow for evening fishing to recommence. We will keep you all posted on the progress!

🎣🎣🎣

21/04/2022

Please be aware that the fishery will be closed to the public on Saturday 7th May due to a private club booking. We hope to see our regular anglers another time. 😊

19/04/2022

Fishing Report: 19th April 2022

What a week we had despite the bright sunshine and high temperatures. Summer certainly felt like it arrived and was perfectly timed for the bank holiday Easter weekend. Plenty of anglers ventured out, in what most would consider to be some of the least preferable conditions you could choose. Despite this the catches were strong, even to our own surprise. The fish are hard on naturals and we have had some great hatches of buzzer and pond olives throughout the day.

Plenty of fish are rising all over the lake but especially in the mornings and late in the afternoon when the sun starts to drop. Lots of 3-5 fish bags were recorded with the real standout bag coming to Will Parkes, who took 15 fish on Saturday to long lined buzzers fished deep and slow. Several of his bag were over 4lb with his largest tipping the scales at over 7lb. Please don’t forget that when the sun is out and especially if there is a little breeze to put some sun tan lotion on to avoid any painful sun burn!

04/04/2022

Fishing Report: 4th April 2022

Well that was one of the strangest starts to April we can remember with -5C temperatures at night, snow, hail, rain, wind and sunshine - we had it all. Despite the changeable conditions the fish stayed on the feed with bags of up to 7 fish being landed by those that were brave enough to venture out.

Sink tips and intermediates were the lines of choice with damsels and olive zonkers doing well. During the calmer days plenty of buzzers have been hatching off and we saw lots of fish rising on some afternoons. Buzzers fished by both traditional long line technique and static under an indicator have taken plenty of fish.

Don’t forget this coming weekend is the 2022 Virtual Sportfish Show with 2 days of live and recorded video content from some of the biggest names in the game!

28/03/2022

Fishing Report: 28th March 2022

What a week of weather: bright sun, calm days and March highs touching 19 degrees! This would spell doom for most anglers but many were keen to get out and feel the warmth of the sun on their faces.

Despite the bright conditions, fish were feeding well and plenty were landed. Buzzers are hatching in large numbers and the trout are snaffling the pupae and the adults, with lots of rising fish all over the lake.

Another high single-figured fish for regular, Colin Jordan, wasn’t quite big enough to add to his tally of doubles he's had in recent weeks, but a cracker nonetheless. Bags of up to 8 fish were taken, particularly for anglers fishing lures and hot head damsels on floating or sink tip lines. The water is in fantastic condition and fish activity is increasing every day.

The fishery will continue to close at 5.30pm, but this will hopefully change by early May.

22/03/2022

Not long now until the 2022 Virtual Sportfish Show!

Fishing Report: 14th March 2022

Last week was another great one with some more spring-like weather - every week seems to be getting better and better now, as do the hatches.

Once again there was lots of buzzer activity all over the lake, with plenty of rising fish to be seen, and some anglers did well on dries. Nymphs produced good results on floating lines or sink tips with buzzers, hare's ears and Diawl Bachs accounting for plenty of fish. Many anglers have stuck with what has worked well over the last few weeks, taking fish on intermediate lines and mini lures like blobs, damsels and Cat's Whiskers.

We'd like to remind our anglers that the fishery will be closed to the public on Saturday 19th of March for a private club event. If you are part of a club and would like to hire the fishery for your members for a day, please contact the shop for further details on 0118 930 3860.

FISHING REPORT: 07/03/2022

Last week was another busy one at the fishery with plenty of new faces in and around the lake which is always good to see. A few youngsters were getting in on the action too, not just on Kingfisher Pond but also on Haywards Farm Lake itself.

Successful tactics have been similar to those of recent weeks, with intermediates and mini lures such as blobs and Cat's Whiskers doing a lot of damage. There has certainly been a lot more fly activity and lots of buzzers have been hatching off throughout the day. The calmer days have seen plenty of fish rising all over the lake. Some anglers took advantage of these conditions and have landed some cracking fish on dries. We're pleased to report that there were plenty of bags of up to 10 fish, with the best fish tipping the scales at just under 10lbs.

We've also been working hard on Hobby Lake getting it ready for reopening later in the spring, with new fishing platforms all around the lake to make the fishing more accessible. Anyone interested in booking Hobby Lake for private use with your fishing buddies can now call the tackle shop on 0118 930 3860 for more info.
