Diving HMS Untiring – 55m of Naval History
Another dive by a member of Rhondda Scuba Divers Club joining with Oxford BSAC for a dive on the wreck of HMS Untiring.
HMS Untiring is a Second World War wreck lying in around 53–55 metres of water off the South Devon coast. After an active wartime career and later service with the Greek Navy, she was eventually sunk as a sonar training target in 1957.
At this depth, it was very much a CCR dive – making the most of the available bottom time while managing a significant decompression obligation.
Descending into the blue and watching the unmistakable outline of a WWII submarine slowly appear below is something special. With plenty of the wreck still recognisable, Untiring makes for an impressive and atmospheric technical dive.
After some quality time exploring the wreck, the long journey back to the surface began – over an hour of decompression, progressing through the stops before finally breaking the surface.
A fantastic CCR dive, an incredible piece of naval history and another great example of dive clubs coming together for some serious UK wreck diving.

Two of our club members - Catrin and Poppy have spent the last week in Porthdinllaen, North Wales diving every day to collect seagrass seeds with Project Seagrass. They are both HSE divers, Catrin is a marine biology student at University of Plymouth and Poppy is a BSAC Advanced Instructor and also works in the dive industry. A substantial amount of seeds have been collected and they will eventually be replanted to expand seagrass meadows around our shores. A really worthwhile project to take part in! Two of our members were lucky enough to dive the MV Ice Prince last weekend —a 132m Greek cargo ship that sank in 2008 after its timber cargo shifted during severe Channel storms. Now resting upright in approximately 60 meters of water off Portland, it's regarded as one of the UK's premier deep trimix wreck dives.
The upper starboard rail reaches around 43 meters, while much of the accommodation block, bridge, walkways, cargo cranes, engine-room casing, stern, rudder, and impressive propeller remain remarkably intact and clearly recognisable.
With excellent visibility and fantastic conditions both above and below the surface, it made for a truly memorable dive. Due to the wreck's location close to the busy English Channel shipping lanes, dives are carefully planned around the relatively short slack-water window—making good conditions all the more rewarding. Congratulations to both on another fantastic deep wreck dive!
