1st XI Match Report

‘Hallam Hammered by Cool Calm Collegiate’ by Alex Willis

After our first defeat last weekend Sheffield Collegiate resumed winning ways at Abbeydale Park. Firstly, congratulations to our hosts last week Doncaster Town who competed and executed their moments brilliantly.

On Saturday, we looked to extinguish that result as Hallam made the short trip to Abbeydale Park. After a week where rain has reared its head and the overheads looked favourable, Josh Varley won the toss and chose to bowl.

Yet again, we made early inroads, something that this season has been so consistently brilliant. Rob collected the first wicket as Perkins gave TC catching practice. Dangerman Andre Bradford followed Perkins back to the pavilion as Sheryaar perched low to take an excellent catch at point. Sheryaar in the field all day was absolutely magnificent, a performance in the field any pro would be happy with.

Rob drew the edge of Arjun Sumanth and Timby did the rest, before uprooting Davidson’s off stump. Hallam were 5-4. Edward Haynes and William Coates looked to rebuild the innings and formed a 36 run partnership before Henry nicked Haynes off, caught Timby. The very next over JV in his 11th over on the spin bowled Coates, with both hands aloft, JV looked delighted to reap the rewards of a superb spell of athleticism and skill. 15 overs 5 maidens 2 for 19 all in one spell.

With the score on 63, Emery departed with Henry again probing at a good length, this time JV doing the work in the cordon. Captain Nick Dymock looked to be playing on a different wicket and was trying to nudge Hallam to three figures. Abrar took his first wicket as Davis hit him straight into the safe hands of Shaaiq. Smedley gave TC his second catch of the day, Henry collecting his third wicket. It was 112 all out as Carrigan trapped Dymock plumb LBW, he departed for an excellent 45.

With a target of 113. Abdul and the Lincolnshire Lara set about minimising any fuss or angst and did so brilliantly. Timby driving the ball with class and Abdul playing with his elegance and manoeuvring the ball to various parts of the ground.

With a selection of crisp, elegant hitting they put on 85 for the first wicket, Timby caught behind for 45. Excellent knock. That was the 7th time the pairing of Abdul and Timby have put on over 50 runs for the first wicket. Superb platforms set in the trickiest time to bat.

Sheryaar joined Abdul and looked extremely compact and solid as we ticked towards victory. Abdul cut a ball square which the fielder completely lost in the air and the ball trickled over the rope. Abdul secured the win and brought his 50 up with that shot. Collegiate returning to winning ways with a 9 wicket dismantling.

MOTM: impossible to choose this week.

Bowling: JV, Henry and Rob three Yorkshire League South seam and swing bowling stalwarts oozing class.

Batting: Abdul and Timby for showing calmness and maturity to not let a small target become tricky.

Fielding: Everyone set the tone from ball one. Careering round the field and taking our chances. As touched upon earlier, the standards set by Sheryaar.

Next week we travel to Tickhill where we know our task. 6 points enough but the lads will be fully focussed on the full twelve, which would secure the title in style. Your support would be greatly appreciated, the players have loved seeing so many people travel home and away.

Important date for the diaries!

This year’s club End of Season Awards Dinner will take place on the 9th October in the upstairs Abbeydale suite. As usual, we will spend the evening celebrating the achievements of the players and sides from the men’s senior section and women’s and girls section. Please note that the junior presentation evening will take place on a separate evening, date to be shared soon.

More information to follow about buying tickets for the evening but make sure to keep your calendars clear for what will be a wonderful evening!
