University Walking Group

University Walking Group A walking group, open to all that takes advantage of the scenery around Stirling University. Walks start at the MacRobert Centre at 10.30am every Saturday.

Our group started in 2009 as an collaboration between the University and Active Stirling. During that time our numbers have varied between 6 and 25 and we have managed to walk on over 48 weeks of the year. We also vary in age and level of fitness but this doesn't seem to make any difference because the most important thing we have in common is our enjoyment of walking. Our walks vary from fairly flat walks on pavements though the local town to tramping through fields with frolicking lambs and the woods on the hillside above the campus. At this stage we really have to say thank you to those people who have taken the time to train as walk leaders and who give up so much of their time to keep our walks going. Each walk needs two of these volunteers to ensure the safety and enjoyment of the group members. Volunteers are trained by Active Stirling and training sessions takes place several times a year. Each walk has been planned, scoped and checked by the walk leaders several times and is usually checked again in the week leading up to the walk to ensure the route is clear. Heavy winds can bring down trees and block a route or rain can cause the path to become waterlogged or slippery underfoot. This sometimes means we will be unable to do the planned walk for that week and will fall back on a more realistic option. This is sometimes disappointing if you had hoped to cover a particular route but we do try to make the routes as varied as possible.

Saturday 19th September.
Starts at the MacRobert Arts Centre at 10:30 am.

Today's walk is down the River Forth via Cornton Vale. The walk is mainly flat with just a couple of short uphill bits. The forecast is for light rain and a moderate breeze, so wet gear is advised.

The walks are free and are led by trained walk leaders. A good way to find your way round the area . Ian

Saturday 12th September.

Starts at the MacRobert Arts Centre at 10:30am.

Today's walk is down into Bridge of Allan and up Lovers' Loan . This is a path overlooking the bridge in the centre of town. The walk has some short uphill stretches and should last about 2 hours. The forecast is for rain showers and a gentle breeze, so wet gear is advised. Ian

Hi walkers, Robert here, we had mentioned a couple of weeks ago that we would have an open house for those who wished to see the bar/ garden etc. We had a low attendance at last week's walk so nothing was finalised and a few walkers couldn't manage, so we hope to reschedule, discussing on Saturday 12th. Saturday 5th September.
Starts at the MacRobert Arts Centre at 10:30 am.

Today's walk is up into Hermitage woods. This is the Wood immediately behind the campus and is named for the folly built into the cliffside. The walk has some uphill stretches and should last up to 2 hours. The forecast is for sunny spells.and light winds. Ian

Saturday 29th August.
Starts at the MacRobert Arts Centre at 10:30 am.

Today's walk is up into Yellowcraig Wood. This is the wood to the north east of the campus and is named for it's riot of yellow gorse and broom that used to cover its clifftops .The walk has some lengthy uphill stretches ( steep at times) and should last about 2 hours. The forecast is for light cloud and light winds.This is a fairly energetic walk so a wee snack is a good idea .Ian
