Lots of fun had by all at our summer bbq last week.

Burgers replaced bench press and sausage replaced squats, as over 70 Members and their families joined us at Lydiard Park for our summer social on Sunday for an afternoon of sun, food and socialising away from the gym.

Honestly, seeing friendships develop between people that would probably have never met had they not been training with us, is one of my favourite things.

Our Christmas party is already booked, and planning for the autumn social is happening too.

Huge thank you to everyone that joined Zena, Claire, Tara and myself for the afternoon. I love our little community and what we have built and continue to improve.

What a week we’ve had at the gym.

We run an optional strength test week three times a year.

It’s a great opportunity for members to really test themselves, and see how they are progressing.

This time around, we had 72 personal bests shared between:

Dan F, Lisa, Lucy, Iain, Karl, Karen, Roxy, Sam, Lily, Mandy, Pavel, Gwen, Nikki, Shar, Johnathan, Evie, Beth, Robbie, Stephen, James, Esen, Megan, Chelle, Tara, Kerrie, Martin S, Hetti, Tom, Ian, Andrea, Charlotte, Debbie, Floyd, Martin R, Dan H, and Olivia.

Incredible work all around, and a real testament to the members, their hard work and consistency.

I had the honour of organising Martins stag do.

Martin has been one of my best mates for 10 years now, and he’s been a client for even longer.

Some PTs will tell you that you shouldn’t become friends with your clients, but I think that’s complete rubbish. Anyway, this post isn’t about that or even about Martin, it’s about who he invited.

7 of the 11 attendees were from the gym.

I think it’s pretty bloody special when people you meet at a gym and regularly train with become some of the closest friends you have.

But making new friends is regular occurrence for our members, and one of the often overlooked benefits of training in small groups.

Just this week, our members have celebrated a wedding and the birth of a new born, with people that they probably wouldn’t have ever met.

When we say that NXXT Step Fitness is a community, that’s not just a buzzword, we really mean it and we can back it up.

These photos are exactly 7 years apart.

It wasn’t a goal of mine when opening the gym, but one of the best things that has come out of it, is how much more time I get to spend with my family.

It took me years of nagging to get my mum to do some strength training.

7 years on, this is her story.

In 2019 she was in her later fifties, had been reasonably active, regularly swimming, but had never really done any gym work.

She wasn’t strong, she wasn’t mobile, she had daily pain just from standing or walking, and unaware to us at that time, she was losing bone density.

Even with my relentless nagging, she had no interest in the gym. She said she was too old, that it wouldn’t make a difference, she didn’t have the time and that she was past it.

Then everything changed.

Mum had a fall. Nothing crazy, just a simple slip, but when she landed, she broke her arm.

Then she had another. Again, just a little slip, but this time she broke her leg.

She had a scan which showed lower than expected bone density for her age, which contributed to the breaks. Something had to change.

When she started, she couldn’t stand out of a chair without using her hands, easily climb stairs, support her weight with her hands, or even stand for longer than a few minutes without back pain.

Since then, she’s come to the gym twice a week, racking up over 400 sessions.

Now, she can do single leg squats with weight, climb stairs two at a time, can get out of the pool without using the steps, has toned up considerably, can walk for miles pain free, hasn’t had a fall for a long time, and most importantly, has added to her muscle mass and actually increased her bone density, as seen in a subsequent scan three years later.

She also took great pleasure in showing up the local delivery driver by easily carrying boxes into the house after he said “I’ll leave it here until your husband gets home.”

Mum is now fitter, stronger and more physically able at 65 than she was at 40.

We have nearly 100 5 star reviews, so I thought it was about time I shared some of them.

We have been helping and supporting our members to achieve their goals, feel confident in their bodies and enjoy the gym for well over a decade.

But don’t take our word for it. Check out what this member had to say…

Lucy found her thing after hating the gym.

She came to us with a very familiar story.

She’d tried everything. Gym membership, fitness classes, slimming world, boot camps, everything. But she just didn’t like it and never stuck to anything for longer than a month or two.

She wanted to do something, but hadn’t found her thing yet.

I can confidently say after nearly two years and over 250 sessions, that Lucy has found her thing.

Lucy likes strength training, and has gotten insanely strong.

120kg squat, 90kg bench press, 175kg deadlift. Not strong for a girl. Just very very strong.

Helping Lucy find her thing was straightforward. We try things out, keep what she likes and adjust the plan when it doesn’t suit her, Both session to session based on how she’s feeling that day, and longer term as we’ve gotten to know her.

In other words, we coached her.

Knowing that each session can and will be adapted to her needs that day, Lucy keeps showing up, puts the work in, because it’s work she wants to do, and keeps getting amazing results.

MEET THE TEAM

The last of our ‘Meet the Team’ posts is just an excuse to post cute pictures of my dogs really, but they are still a part of what makes NXXT what it is.

Coach Cheese is there pretty much every day, while you can find coach Gus at the gym on a Tuesday.

Always on hand for some fuss, having a dog on your lap is a great excuse for a few more seconds rest.
