These are some of the things that we hear day in and day out when people discuss their approaches to try and get in better shape and improve their body composition.
You could do all of these things and it will have zero effect on changing how you look, if you don’t address the underlying principle of achieving a calorie deficit through controlling your nutrition.
Some studies have actually shown that individuals have gained fat as a result of doing cardio as it increases appetite and they end up in a net calorie surplus. Similarly eating ‘clean’ can have the same effect as a lot of these foods are calorie dense such as nuts and avocados. That’s not to say that you shouldn’t eat these foods as they also contain healthy fats which is essential for hormone function but the quantity needs to be controlled if your goal is fat loss.

The March member of the month is 👏🏼🎉🏆

Hannah started coming to LIFT back in 2024, and has been a consistent member ever since. Hannah first joined LIFT because she already did a lot of high intensity training in her current programme and wanted to add in some structured strength training.

Over the past 18 months Hannah has competed in several HYROX Sims, her first ever official HYROX competition in London and completed Taunton Half marathon, all whilst working on her goal of building her strength and improving her endurance alongside it.
One thing that we’re really proud of Hannah for, in this whole journey is that whilst completing all of these events, Hannah has been managing a number of different injuries and other significant life stresses which would have made it very easy to quit, but her resilience is what has shown through every single time.

Often when injuries occur it can lead to a lack of motivation and derail progress, but Hannah sets a perfect example of how you can still continue to train around an injury, progress towards a goal and not give up.

Hannah is a brilliant Lift member, she’s kind, supportive, empathetic and often puts others before herself to support them in their training and with their own goals.

Thank you Hannah for being such a great member, you thoroughly deserve this and we absolutely love having you as part of LIFT 👏🏼✨🫶🏼

How much training do you actually need to be fit and healthy? 👀

Based on current guidelines and the best available evidence, you can cover the essentials in under 3 hours per week.

That said — this is a minimum effective dose.
If your goal is to build a great physique, boost performance, or reach a higher level of fitness, you’ll need to go beyond this.

Start with the baseline. Then build from there.

If you feel like you’re training but you’re not seeing progress then it usually comes down to a few key principles: 📝‼️📈

If your goal is to lose weight. You need to be tracking calories and macronutrients through an app consistently in order to ensure you are in a calorie deficit and you need to do this for at least 8-12 weeks to start to see a noticeable change.

If you want to build strength and increase muscle mass. You should be lifting at least 2 - 3 times per week and training hard enough so that you are pushing every set close to or to failure.

If you want to improve your fitness.
You need consistency again and enough volume — aim for 2-3 cardio sessions every week as a minimum to improve your aerobic fitness.

You will see results by following these principles consistently and sticking with them. ✅📊

At LIFT Taunton we know that there is no such thing as the “perfect” exercise for everyone.

What works well for one person might not be right for another and that’s ok! The right exercise will depend on training history, training goals and individual biomechanics.

That’s why in our small group strength training sessions we don’t just hand out the same exercises to everyone. We coach, adapt, progress and change movements so they work for the individual in front of us and their specific needs.

The result? Every session is effective, progressive and always keeps you moving forward and getting stronger safely.

Most people trying to get in shape focus on the wrong things and most people completely overcomplicate body composition ☝🏼 let’s break it down…

If your goal is to improve your body composition by reducing your body fat and increasing your muscle mass then you need to focus on just 2 main things:

• Lifting weights 2-3 times a week to build muscle 🏋️💪🏼
• Maintaining a calorie deficit with enough protein in it to lose fat and maintain muscle 🐟🍖🌽

You don’t need endless hours of cardio or a completely extreme fad diet.

Focus purely on these two things and stay consistent with them and your body will change.

If you’ve ever wondered what our LIFT sessions are all about at LIFT Taunton, here’s a bit of a breakdown.

Every session is full body so you’re training all the major muscle groups each time you come in. The whole session is structured, programmed and most importantly coach led, meaning you’re not just wandering around a gym trying to work out what to do next.

We focus on proper lifting technique, helping you move well and build strength and muscle safely. Whether you’ve been training for a while or you’ve not lifted weights before, our coaching will meet you where you’re at, helping to keep you improving and progressing at your own level.

Our sessions are designed to take the guesswork out of training, give you good coaching and form guidance and make sure you get the most out of your training.

Welcome to LIFT Taunton.

LIFT Taunton is based in Galmington Trading Estate, just off Wellington Road. There is plenty of parking available outside — we are just 6 minutes from the town centre and 4 minutes from Musgrove Park Hospital.

Our facility is purpose-built for Strength and Conditioning.

We specialise in resistance training to build strength, increase muscle mass, and improve body composition — delivered through our signature LIFT sessions.

We pride ourselves on teaching people how to lift weights properly. That means correct form, excellent technique, and building the kind of confidence that carries over into every session. Our coaches are approachable, supportive, and focused on helping you progress safely and effectively.
