Racehorse Rovers

Racehorse Rovers, like all other member clubs, were asked to vote on a proposal to allow a newly formed side to enter straight into the Premier Division of the Taunton District League. This club had already been granted permission to enter two sides into the district, with one entering directly into Division 1. A decision that many clubs, including ourselves, had already questioned.

While we completely understand the challenges faced by the League Committee following the unfortunate withdrawal of several well-established clubs, Racehorse Rovers were firmly against this proposal and are extremely disappointed with the outcome.

When we, and many other long-standing clubs, entered the league, we requested the opportunity to enter either Division 1 or the Premier Division. We were denied, with the reasons given being that doing so could undermine the integrity and structure of the competition. We understood and respected that decision.

That is why we find the latest outcome particularly difficult to accept.

It is unfair on the clubs who have spent years building their teams, progressing through the divisions and earning their place within the league. Those clubs have had to work their way up through the system, season after season, with promotion being the reward for their performances on the pitch.

Racehorse Rovers have spent the last two seasons doing exactly that, building a club, competing, earning promotion and ultimately winning Division 1. To see a newly formed side given direct access to the Premier Division, without having to earn that position through competition, feels completely at odds with the principles that have previously been applied to existing member clubs.

Club stature, facilities, resources or perceived potential should not determine where a team starts. The same rules and opportunities should apply to every club, whether newly formed or long established.

We fully appreciate the difficult circumstances currently facing the league, but we also believe it is important to recognise and respect the commitment of the clubs who have served the Taunton District League for many years.

For us, this is about fairness, consistency and the integrity of the competition, and ensuring that clubs who have worked hard to earn their place are not disadvantaged as a result.

Racehorse Rovers 1-1 Shepton Beauchamp

The newly formed reserves continued there pre season as they took on what was arguably there greatest test as they faced Yeovil & District Premier League side Shepton Beauchamp away from home!

Ben set the lads out with the game plan to make themselves hard to beat and hold their own against a side of this level, and didn’t they just! A solid first 45 minutes which seen Shepton very limited in there chances, the instructions at half time was to carry on just as they were but to maybe take some risks and see if they could put some pressure on the back line, the second half was very much the same, both sides canceling eachother out… until a bizarre free kick was award for Shepton which in fairness was scored brilliantly from 25 yard, and with 20 minutes left this kicked the horse into gear to have a go and throw the kitchen sink and them… knocking on the door several times but not managing to beat the keeper and with seconds left, the ball was worked brilliantly out to the right hand side for our Zappi to cut inside like a young Robben and put in a great cross come shot which beat everyone including the keeper!!!

This result and performance really shown why and what making this side was for, proper Racehorse! Next up is Old Inn Vents which will be another tough test but one we are looking forward to! 🐎🤍💚

Another valuable test for the lads as we continue building towards the new season. Plenty of minutes in the legs, plenty to work on, and another chance to see what this group can do💪

Another team has pulled out, so our reserves are looking for a team to play this Saturday (15th). We have a pitch booked for a 2pm KO. We play at Richard Huish College in Taunton. Our reserves are a newly formed side that will be playing in division 2 of the Taunton and District Saturday Football League.

Due to our opposition pulling out, both our first team and reserves are looking for teams to step in for a friendly on Saturday August 29th. Both games will be played at Richard Huish College.

Up the Racehorse! 🐎

Another preseason win for the First Team last night, coming away with a dramatic 4-3 victory over North Curry, with the winner coming in the final minute!

It’s always a good test against a side that’s been alongside us since we both joined the league, and last night was no different

The playing surface made things difficult from the first whistle. The pitch was rock hard, almost like playing on concrete, making it difficult for either side to play their usual football

Racehorse started brightly and were excellent for the opening 25 minutes before the water break, creating chances and controlling the game. After that, the match became much more even, with the conditions proving to be a real leveller. Both teams created plenty of opportunities, but North Curry’s goalkeeper was outstanding, pulling off a number of excellent saves to keep his side in it

The low evening sun in the second half also caused problems for the Racehorse defence, making visibility difficult at times, but the lads dug deep and were rewarded with a dramatic winner in the final minute to secure the victory

Most importantly, it was another valuable runout with vital minutes in the legs as preparations continue for the new season. There were also plenty of encouraging performances from new faces looking to earn their place at the club, giving the management team plenty to think about.
