It’s a busy time for birthdays and we have another notable one for a long standing and popular member Graham “Rossi” Ross who celebrates his 70th….
Rossi has been a member for 8 years and goes through periods where he attends every session and then disappears on short term contracts or more recently on long voyage cruises…..!
A great character and a steady, solid and dependable player who has turned out for the competition teams when we were struggling and stepped in a couple of times as a keeper and never let us down.
Know that AlanM will be the first to offer his mate from Sunderland very best wishes and am sure all others will also join me in sending him greetings as he hits the big seven 0……

We had 2 select sides in action tonight at WFC with NOD as referee.
Reds PaulH, MarkP, TonyW, MarkS, JohnA, DaveB, ColinH
Whites MarkC, Kempez, Jim, ShaunF, SeanW, AlanSweeney
The Whites only had 6 men and Alan Sweeney was making his debut which he marked with a terrific goal..
The first 10 minutes were the usual cagey tight affair and with 2 top keepers in PaulH and MarkC the few speculative efforts that were made were saved with ease. The next 10 saw Kempez combine with AlanS who cracked home a fine opener but it didn’t take MarkS long to respond and it was 1-1 after 20 mins.
The final 10 of the first half saw JohnA hammer a toepoke that flew past MarkC and then Kempez skilfully squeezed a shot past PaulH to make it 2-2. It seemed that the half would end even but ColinH knocked in a late goal for the reds that Mark appeared to have saved but it trickled home and it was 3-2 to Reds at half time.
Reds extended the lead immediately after the restart when PaulH quickly restarted play with the Whites dawdling and Colin again scored to make it 4-2 after 40 mins and the next 10 saw JohnA make it 5-2 as he capped a fine individual display with his second goal.
5-2 going into the last 10 with red on 3 fouls and AlanS made it 5-3 with a well taken goal and the pressure was on the Reds. They were on the back foot and DaveB gave away a foul to concede a penalty and Kempez buried it to make it 5-4. It was an anxious last 5 as the whites looked to grab the equaliser and MarkP and MarkS used all their experience to try and manage the game for Reds with PaulH bawling instructions. Jim and SeanW both pressed and recovered the ball and ShaunF pushed forward and had a couple of efforts go high and wide while PaulH made a couple of fine saves from Kempez and AlanS and the Reds prevailed 5-4.
Cracking game with TonyW and ColinH both impressing and DaveB and MarkS working hard. Big shout out to MarkP who was playing at Heywood today as a late replacement and was also in action and leading the Reds.

Thanks to ChrisH for todays Whites report from Heywood where he went for round 6 of the GMWFL 60’s division 2, looking to build on last month’s progression.
Chris writes.…. It was going to be tough playing three teams above us in the league, including the top two, and a side near the bottom with an improved squad. With a few regulars missing we still went with a strong squad of
Chris H, Peter I, Sutty, Mark R, Tony B, Mark P and Ian Rose.
First game v. Rochdale Strollers
The Strollers started the day in second place, but we showed the early initiative with a couple of shots from good pressure. Whilst we shaded possession, we had the majority of shots but couldn’t find the net. An encouraging performance, but disappointing 0-0 draw where we felt we deserved better.
Second game v. Moston Brook
Moston are league leaders and started well with a couple of early shots which Peter sorted. I felt we took the initiative and not only shaded possession but then had the majority of efforts. We hit the post and stanchion twice, plus other shots that either just missed or the keeper saved well. They had other chances which either were defended or Peter saved. This was a good performance, with plenty of pass and move, and we deserved more than the 0-0 draw.
Third game v. North Manchester
North Manchester started the day in the bottom two, but they’re progressing at a rate of knots with a completely changed squad and they gave us the most problems today. They kept the ball well and so we couldn’t dominate as we usually do and possession was shared. We were the more threatening in front of goal, and whilst not as many shots as previous games, they were good genuine chances including a number of “one on one’s”, which on another day we would have buried. However, the inevitable happened and we conceded a scruffy miss hit goal. They managed the game out from then on. A very disappointing 1-0 loss.
Fourth game v. Bury Relics Blues
Blues were sitting just above us in the league table, so another difficult game was expected. We started like a house on fire! We had three really good chances which we just couldn’t covert, either just wide or drawing saves from the keeper. He had a very good game indeed. We had the lions share of possession and had the majority of chances but we didn’t have it all our own way. This was emphasised with a couple of chances before a thunderbolt from the middle of midfield which nestled into the bottom left hand corner giving Peter no chance. Nevertheless, this time we fought back and Sutty netted a thunderous shot of his own for the equaliser. A point from a 1-1 draw, and whilst the Blues will be disappointed dropping two points so late, we more than deserved a share of the spoils, and in all honesty should have been more.
Summary
A most frustrating day at the office, excellent attacking intent, numerous shots, resolute in defence but only three points to show for it! I couldn’t have asked more from all the players but it just wasn’t our day! Over 40 shots recorded but only one solitary goal at the end. This makes it difficult to reach the third place, and promotion, as we are now 7th, nine points away, with nine games left to play. Small margins….😤

We have another couple of birthdays tomorrow for 2 well established and useful players including a notable one…
First up we have Stephen “Cavvy” Caven who celebrates his 70th….
Cavvy is a long time member who doesn’t get down very often to the social sessions nowadays but when he does he is a really good player. He is a solid and strong midfield player who likes to get forward and has scored some impressive goals. He was actually in action on Tuesday for the 70+ Reds team who made an impressive start to the NCL campaign. It is always good to see him down playing and I know he made a big contribution to the 70+ success.
Secondly we have the 68th birthday for Mick Yelland.
Mick has been a member for the last couple of years and is a very steady and reliable player who attends the 3 touch sessions. He is quiet and unassuming but is a fairly rugged defender who never lets the side down. He was playing today and scored a lovely goal for the yellow team.

Tomorrow 8 Oct the Whites are playing in the GMWF at Heywood. Chris has selected the following squad.
Chris H, Peter I, MarkP, Tony B, Sutty, Mark R and Ian Rose.

Saturday 10 Oct we have a select side playing against a Parkies Pennines team at WFC at 10:30. MickW will manage and captain a squad that includes
MickW, DaveB, Michelle, Justin, Marshy, DavidH, KevinM
Parkies will include GaryMilligan, ChrisR and a few others who play regularly at Wakefield.

On Sunday 11 Oct we have 4 teams in the 50+ & 60+ NCL at WFC.
Atletico - NeilB, PaulS, RichSands, Martin, Simon, AndyS, GrahamJ, Bam
Redoubt - Macca, MickP, Jimmy, SteveB, Fez, Kempez, RichSmith.
Wanderers - MarkC, CharlesA, Kim, GlennB, Andy Lowrey, DaveO
Whites - Peter, ChrisH, PhillB, Sutty, Mark R, Dave Marsh and Ian Rose.
MickL has already sent out fixtures but gather he is having to rejig and change following a late team withdrawal. Am sure he will be notifying the Managers of the changes asap

We only had 29 at WFC along with NOD and MickL so decided to revert back to 4@7 with the late attendee Dolores joining the reds team and so some close and well contested games.
Thanks to Mick who refereed on the top pitch while I remained with the yellow team who were involved in 2 draws and a victory.
Having 7 a side certainly restricts the space and puts a premium on ball control and we had some terrific examples in action with JohnMc, MarkR, PhilW, AlanS and DavidH all showing some skill and application.
We had a few terrific goals with PeterI bagging a couple and PaulW and MickY knocking in fine efforts from distance.
Jan showed her control and awareness and Dolores was rock solid in defence while MickW was hitting some long distance passes with great accuracy. Bren, DavidL and ChrisS showed good touches and KevinM and DaveB both produced some fine passes. MarkP, Noel, PaulB and AlanH were all energetic as was Brian who was pulled for running !!
Fine session and many thanks to MickL who as always refereed with common sense to the fore.

Usual 4 teams in action tonight across the 2 pitches.
The Atletico session was refereed by SeanW who I gather did very well and DavidO selected the following teams.
Blue: NeilB, Rich, JC, Graham J, Martin, Andy, Bam.
Orange: Peter, Justin, Simon, Paul, Stan, Kim, Dave O.
Understand from David that the games were very even and the 2@30 minute games both ended 2-2. He was racing off but mentioned that AndyS scored and GrahamJ scored an equaliser for Blue after Kim and Simon both scored for the Oranges.
He was of course looking to make sure that all were fit and well for the NCL games that are coming up on Sunday - certainly looked like a good workout as RichS and NeilB both had a dab on leaving WFC…..😂
The Redoubt session was refereed by NOD and Glyn selected the squads
Reds Macca, Prica, Jimmy, Wattsy, Fez, RichS, RichC
Whites PaulH, Mobby, Robbo, SteveB, KevC, Kempez, Glyn
The first 30 mins were 4 touch and there was some impressive action as the ball fizzed around the pitch and the keepers both made good saves. It was 0-0 until 29 mins and SteveB hit a wicked toepoke that flew past Macca into the net.
The second 30 were unlimited and the Reds started in impressive form with RichS capitalising on a couple of slips to make it 2-1 to Reds and he then completed his hattrick in the first 5 minutes with a lovely goal following an interchange with Fez and RichC. 3-1 to Reds after 40 mins.
The next 10 saw KevinC pull one back for Whites before his brother Rich extended the lead back for and again Kempez pulled one back only for Jimmy to re establish the lead 5-3.
The final 10 saw Kevin again make it 5-4 and the whites worked hard to get the equaliser and had chances but PaulH made some fine stops. Reds sealed the game with a late penalty that RichC knocked past Paul to make it 6-4.
A couple of well matched teams in a game played in great spirit throughout.
