⚽️🧤 GOALKEEPER STRENGTH & CONDITIONING WORKSHOP 🧤⚽️

The off-season is a huge opportunity for goalkeepers.

Whilst technical and tactical development are important, the physical qualities that underpin performance are often overlooked.

On Sunday 5th July, we will be delivering a Goalkeeper Strength & Conditioning Workshop in Worcester (WR3 8HN), designed to help goalkeepers understand what the game demands physically and how they can prepare effectively for the season ahead.

The workshop will include:

✅ The physical demands of modern goalkeeping
✅ Explosive power, speed, agility and reactions
✅ Practical goalkeeper-specific Strength & Conditioning session
✅ Goalkeeper functional movement programme
✅ A take-home 4-week summer training plan to help goalkeepers arrive at pre-season ready to perform

The session combines classroom learning with practical delivery, helping goalkeepers understand not only what to do, but why it matters.

There is limited availability on Saturday 4th for those unable to attend on Sunday. The Saturday is predominantly for our current members.

What Defines an “Academy Goalkeeper Coach”? 🧤

Let’s dispel the myths 🤔

Not every goalkeeper coach is an Academy Goalkeeper Coach.

The title is generally defined by working within a licensed professional football academy operating under the Elite Player Performance Plan (EPPP) in England. These academies are audited and categorised by the Premier League and the English Football League as Category 1, 2, 3 or 4 academies.

📍 What makes someone an Academy Goalkeeper Coach?
✅ Employed or contracted by a club academy within the EPPP structure
✅ Responsible for the development of goalkeepers in the academy pathway (U9–U21)
✅ Works within a formal player development programme, curriculum and games programme
✅ Contributes to player reviews, Individual Development Plans (IDPs) and multidisciplinary support processes
✅ Operates within academy standards, safeguarding requirements and performance audits

📍 What level do they work at?
Academy Goalkeeper Coaches can work across:

⚽ Foundation Phase (U9–U11)
⚽ Youth Development Phase (U12–U16)
⚽ Professional Development Phase (U17–U21)

🧤💪 We are delighted to launch our upcoming Goalkeeper Strength & Conditioning Workshop exclusively for our GK Union Academy goalkeepers! 🤩

⚽ As goalkeepers, we know that technical ability is only part of the equation. Developing strength, power, agility, mobility and resilience is essential for performing consistently and reducing injury risk throughout the season.

🎓 That’s why we’re excited to welcome David Coombes, Head of Goalkeeping at Northampton Town FC, to deliver this specialist workshop. Through both classroom-based learning and practical sessions, our goalkeepers will gain a greater understanding of how to prepare, train and perform at their best.

📚 One of the biggest misconceptions in youth football is that strength training simply means lifting weights. In reality, age-appropriate strength and conditioning is about developing movement quality, coordination, balance, stability, athleticism and body control. When introduced correctly and under expert guidance, it helps young athletes build strong foundations for long-term development and injury prevention.

🚀 This workshop is designed to help our keepers get ahead and prepare for the 2026/27 season with a structured approach to goalkeeper-specific movement, performance and physical development.

However, it’s important to understand that these opportunities aren’t guaranteed or reserved for every goalkeeper.

A huge thank you and congratulations to all the goalkeepers who attended our May Half-Term GK Camp over the last two days.

The effort, attitude, and willingness to learn on display throughout every session were outstanding. It was fantastic to see so many young keepers pushing themselves, developing new skills, and supporting each other along the way.

We hope you enjoyed the experience as much as we did and took plenty of confidence and knowledge back to your clubs and teams.
