York RI U12 Girls produced an excellent all-round performance at home to Wilberfoss, combining clinical finishing with some superb defending to earn a deserved 3–0 victory and a clean sheet.
After last week’s frustrating defeat in a game where RI created more than enough chances to win, this time the difference was clear — the girls took their opportunities when they came and were incredibly solid defensively throughout the team.
Wilberfoss looked a strong side from the opening whistle and the early stages were competitive and fairly end-to-end, with both teams feeling their way into the game. RI perhaps started a little slowly in places but quickly realised they would have to compete for everything and responded brilliantly.
The breakthrough came fairly early. A BP throw-in was attacked positively by RI and OS raced through towards the penalty area before finishing confidently past the goalkeeper to put RI 1–0 ahead.
Wilberfoss continued to apply plenty of pressure, particularly through the middle of the pitch, but the RI defence showed great discipline. MT was excellent throughout, producing a succession of strong clearances, while EM had another really solid game alongside her. DF once again gave an extremely assured performance, doing the simple things exceptionally well — winning tackles, clearing danger and bringing the ball out effectively when the opportunity arose.
RI also adapted their shape as the game developed. IA moved further forward from her defensive midfield role and did a good job of holding the ball up and helping the team get out of defence, while BP dropped into a more defensive role and responded superbly, repeatedly winning and clearing the ball.
Behind them, CA continued to grow in confidence in goal. She made several important saves and, particularly pleasingly, came confidently off her line on a number of occasions to deal with danger.
RI doubled their lead following something the girls had worked on in training during the week.
After practising both attacking and defensive corners, OS delivered a corner which was initially cleared by Wilberfoss. She reacted immediately, putting the ball back into the danger area, where it fell to AH who calmly slotted home to make it 2–0.
The scoreline perhaps didn't tell the whole story at that stage, as Wilberfoss continued to threaten and won several corners of their own. Again, though, RI's work in training paid off. The defensive shape was excellent, with MT particularly strong at the front post in clearing danger.
As substitutions were made, the intensity never dropped. GW brought her usual energy through the centre, getting up and down the pitch and putting pressure on the opposition. HB, still relatively new to the team, again impressed with her energy, strength and willingness to compete, particularly when helping to defend set pieces.
CL also worked hard when introduced in an attacking midfield role, contributing both going forward and when tracking back.
There were also encouraging signs in RI's attacking play. EH, OS and AH linked particularly well, with ER also contributing when introduced. The girls are increasingly beginning to play quick early passes, form little triangles and recognise one another's movement without needing to think about it quite so much — a really positive sign of the team's growing understanding.
RI began the second half especially strongly, pressing Wilberfoss high up the pitch and immediately putting their defence under pressure.
That competitive approach was summed up by HB, who raced through towards goal and committed fully to a challenge with the goalkeeper. She came off slightly winded, but it was another example of the determination and bravery being shown throughout the team.
Wilberfoss still carried a threat and had a couple of opportunities during the second half which, on another day, could have made the closing stages more uncomfortable. But RI continued to defend resolutely and, when chances did get through, CA and the defence dealt with them.
The decisive third goal was another excellent moment.
A ball forward from BP released OS, who had found herself in a similar position earlier in the half. Having been encouraged to take the ball closer and draw the goalkeeper before finishing, this time she did exactly that. OS drove into the area, waited for the goalkeeper to commit and calmly slipped the ball past her to make it 3–0.
It was a very good finish, but just as pleasing was how well she had listened and immediately put that advice into practice.
RI managed the remainder of the game well, with the substitutes continuing to make an impact whenever introduced. IA, GW, HB, CL and ER all brought fresh energy, while EH and AH continued to work hard when on the pitch. Across the whole squad, every player who came on contributed immediately and maintained the intensity of the performance.
The final whistle confirmed an excellent 3–0 victory and a thoroughly deserved clean sheet.
AH was named Wilberfoss' Player of the Match after an excellent performance leading the line and a well-taken goal.
The Coaches' Player of the Match went to HB, whose energy, physicality and determination stood out in another hugely encouraging performance as she continues to settle into the team.
The Parents' Player of the Match was MT after a superb defensive display. She was consistently strong at the back, made numerous important clearances and played a major part in helping RI secure the clean sheet.
Most pleasing of all is the continued progress of the whole team. The girls are competing for one another, beginning to understand each other's movement and showing that they can adapt during games while maintaining their effort and discipline.
Another big step forward — and onwards and upwards to the next one.
