RESTORATIVE + PRANAYAMA

If your nervous system has been living in go mode, this is your invitation to practice the opposite.

In Iyengar Yoga, restorative asana and pranayama are not a luxury. They are training.
Training the body to release unnecessary effort.
Training the breath to become smooth and quiet.
Training the mind to stay present without gripping.

A simple truth: when the breath is supported, the mind softens.
That is why we set the body up carefully.
Blankets.
Bolsters.
Belts.
A chair.
The right height under the head.
The right space for the ribs.

Rest is not passive here. It is precise.
And it changes everything.

Come practice restorative + pranayama with us this week.

“No, no, no.” Then, one small adjustment later: “Yes, like that.”

That’s Iyengar Yoga in action. The details change everything.

In this chair-supported backbend, Randy corrects the hand placement before allowing the action to continue. Once the hands are in the right position, the next instruction reveals the real work: Skyler isn’t simply leaning against the chair. She’s actively pulling on it.

The chair becomes more than support. It becomes a point of resistance, helping create the lift and extension of the backbend.

Then comes one final detail: take the head toward the tailbone. By connecting these two ends of the spine, the arch extends through the entire back rather than concentrating in the lower back.

“Do you see the arching that occurs?”

Watch closely. The change isn’t about pushing harder or forcing a deeper pose. It comes from precise hand placement, an intentional action, and an intelligent direction of movement.

Your turn: The next time you use a chair or another prop in a backbend, ask yourself: Am I simply resting against it, or am I actively working with it?

Sometimes, the smallest adjustment reveals an entirely different pose.

BACKBENDS

If backbends make you feel like you have to throw yourself into the pose, pause.
That’s not the assignment.

In Iyengar Yoga, backbends start with the legs.
Ground the feet.
Lift the inner legs.
Stabilize the pelvis.
Then the spine can extend with intelligence.

Here’s the question we love in backbend work:
Can I create space without losing steadiness?

This is where props become your best friend.
A wall to teach direction.
A chair to teach lift.
A bolster to teach openness without strain.

Backbends are energizing, yes.
But they are also a study in courage and clarity.

Come explore backbends with us this week.

THROWBACK THURSDAY | Learning from Patricia Walden

What does it take to find freedom in Urdhva Dhanurasana (Upward Bow Pose)? Sometimes, the answer lies in understanding the relationship between two seemingly simple landmarks: the ribs and the front hips.

In this workshop from 2024, Patricia Walden draws our attention to the importance of bringing the ribs and front hips parallel to the floor. This is more than a matter of shape. It is an invitation to refine our understanding of the backbend, organize the body with greater intelligence, and discover where effort can give way to greater freedom.

As Patricia recently celebrated her 80th birthday, we are reminded of how much she has given to the Iyengar Yoga community. Through decades of teaching, she has generously shared not only her deep understanding of asana, but also her personal stories and experiences with B.K.S. Iyengar. These teachings have shaped how generations of practitioners approach their practice and how teachers communicate, observe, and guide their students.

The gift of a great teacher extends far beyond the classroom. It lives on in the details we learn to see, the questions we learn to ask, and the understanding we carry into our own teaching and practice.

Thank you, Patricia, for your generosity, your dedication, and the wisdom you continue to share with us. We are grateful to keep learning from you.

What details have transformed your understanding of Urdhva Dhanurasana?

FORWARD EXTENSIONS

Forward extensions teach humility in a very practical way: you can’t fake length.

If the hamstrings pull, the back rounds. If the back rounds, the breath gets crowded. So we learn the Iyengar way: create space first, then move.

This is why props matter. A belt, a chair, a bolster, a wall… they’re not “modifications.” They’re tools that help you keep the spine long while the body learns.

Try this next time:
• lift up out of the waist before you fold
• keep the thighs moving back
• let the breath stay smooth, even when the pose gets challenging

Want to learn forward bends that build clarity (not just flexibility)? Come practice with us.

STANDING ASANAS

Want a standing pose to feel steadier without muscling it?
Start with the feet.

In Iyengar Yoga we treat the feet like a map.
Big toe mound.
Little toe mound.
Inner heel.
Outer heel.

When all four corners of the foot are awake, the legs organize themselves. The knees track more honestly. The pelvis steadies. The spine has something real to rise from.

Try this in Tadasana:
1) Spread the toes.
2) Press down evenly through the four corners.
3) Lift the inner ankles without gripping the toes.
4) Let the thighs lift and the chest broaden.

Simple, not easy. That is the fun part.

Come practice standing asanas with us this week and let the floor teach you.
