One of the biggest contributors to cardiac drift isnât fitness.
â˝ď¸Itâs fueling.
âWhy is my heart rate so high today?ââŚWhen glycogen starts running low, your heart rate often starts climbing while your power stays the same (or drops). Suddenly that endurance pace feels very suspicious.
Your body isnât trying to be dramatic. Itâs just asking for carbs.
So hereâs your reminder:
đ Eat before youâre hungry
đŹ Fuel before youâre tired
đ´ Treat carbs like part of the workout because they are
Your aerobic engine can only do so much if you forgot to put gas in the tank.
Your Garmin canât power your legs. Only carbs can do that.

Everyone wants a bigger FTP.
Nobody wants to hear that the answer might be riding easier. đ
Cardiac drift (aka decoupling) is one of the best indicators of your aerobic fitness.
đŤIf your heart rate keeps climbing while your power stays the same, your body is basically sending you a little message: âhey... weâre working harder than we should be right now.âđśď¸
The good news? Thatâs trainable.
Build the foundation. Ride your endurance rides like endurance rides. Eat your carbs.
Training isnât always about going harder. Sometimes itâs about getting better at the boring stuff.

Over a month ago already (yikes đ
) Coach Otte ran a half marathon⌠and PRâd it.
And in the weeks leading up to it she kept getting the same question:
