Never take a chance when it comes to water safety. Sometimes the safest trip to the pool is to not go.
If you have multiple non-swimmers and not enough adults to offer safe in-water and hands-on supervision, playtime in the pool is likely not your safest and best option.
Public and backyard splash pads, sprinklers, kiddie pools and water tables are a fun and safer alternative to staying cool this summer if you are outnumbered. 😅

I am often asked what parents can do ahead of lessons to help their child.
💦 Get them used to having water on their face. You can do this by bringing them into the shower or by gently letting water run down their face when in the tub.
💦 Always hold them when in the pool (no floats.) This sends the message that they need to be with an adult every time they are in the water.
💦 Don’t teach them to blow bubbles. We actually want them to learn how to hold their breath underwater, not let it all out.
💦 Discourage the intentional drinking of bath and pool water.

If everyone is watching, no one is watching
With summer pool parties and family get togethers on the horizon, this one is an important thing to remember.
Many people think:
More Adults = More Eyes = Safer but THIS.IS.NOT.ALWAYS.TRUE!
Typically, More Adults = More Distractions = Assuming Someone Else Is Watching
🚫 Don't Assume!
So how do we navigate this scenario? 🧐
💡 Assign a Water Watcher.
Rotate who that adult is every 15-20 minutes. This person's sole focus is making sure everyone in the pool is safe - No cell phone, No side conversations, No distractions, No stepping away for a moment while "on duty." Have something that clearly designates the person for others to see (a wristband, a lanyard, a hat, etc.)
😅 Water Safety is EVERYONE'S Responsibility!

All ISR lessons are 1:1 😅 This allows the instructor to create a unique lesson for each student that caters to their specific needs on any given day and thus optimizes their time and safety in the water 💙

A good habit of practicing family water safety is to go over the rules before every water encounter. Even if you think they already know or think they are too young to understand, the consistency of hearing and knowing that these rules will be enforced could potentially save their life. Here are some great rules to consider:
✅Remind children to ALWAYS ask an adult for permission before going to the water AND that they should NEVER go into the water without an adult.
👧👦Always swim with a buddy. Even the strongest and most skilled swimmers of any age can find themselves in a dangerous situation.
🙅♀️Dunking others and breath holding games are never safe.
✅Teach kids to keep their hands to themselves when in the water. Skilled swimmers are no match for a struggling swimmer who may grab onto them out of panic and pull them under too. Discuss strategies with kids so that if another child is grabbing them or if another child is in trouble they know to seek help from an adult.
🚫Teach your children to stay away from drains or suction outlets in pools and hot tubs. Keep long hair pulled back and remove any jewelry or loose items that could get caught in them.
💦Make sure your children know where all of the pool exits are located.
