DEFINE Pilates is resistance training. Not stretching.

Pilates—particularly apparatus-based work using reformer, Cadillac, and chair—relies on spring-loaded resistance, not passive flexibility. The springs create load against muscle contraction, requiring control through both concentric and eccentric phases.

What is actually happening physiologically:
• Muscle contraction under load → builds strength (same principle as weight training)
• Eccentric control against spring tension → increases muscle length while strengthening
• Time under tension + controlled tempo → improves muscular endurance and definition
• Core stabilization under resistance → trains deep stabilizers, not just surface muscles

Stretching vs. Pilates (clear distinction):
• Stretching = passive lengthening, minimal load
• Pilates = active lengthening under resistance (strength + control)
