MADAGASCAR 🇲🇬

Nouria Newman Owen Doyle Willie Henkel descended the Antainambalana River. Whether it was a first descent is still up for debate. Local paddlers explored the upper and lower sections some 15–20 years ago, while much of the middle section remained untouched. Along the way, the river cuts through dry plateau, sub-humid forest, and primary rainforest.

Getting there meant a 24-hour road journey. Getting down it meant 52 km of hiking with kayaks hauled by zebu cart, hard portages, rope work, slick rocks, rain, leeches, crocodiles, and a few good rapids mixed in.

“On the river, it’s just simple. It feels like the only stress is unpacking and packing your stuff, thinking about the rapid, what you have going on that day, or what hikes you’re going to do. Then when you get off the river, all of a sudden you’re hit with everything - your phone, work, school, and whatnot.

That’s what makes being on the river so nice. For a little while, nothing else really matters.”

Who’s getting along with on trail?

put Sparkle through a round of hot takes as she’s been putting in thousands of miles behind her answers.

She’s 7,500 miles and 21 states into a 10,000+ mile year goal. Now on her ninth pair of Nosobos, with Colorado, New Mexico, and 566 miles of California desert still ahead.

Her hottest take that wasn’t in the video: Thru hiking is a mental challenge with a physical component, not the other way around.

“It’s not the strongest, fastest, or most ultralight people who finish. It’s the ones who stay consistent and know how to reframe when things get tough. The mind decides before the body and if you can’t adjust the narrative, you’ll find every excuse to quit.”

SZN SHIFTING.

Today marks the autumnal equinox - the moment the sun crosses the celestial equator, bringing the Northern and Southern Hemispheres nearly equal amounts of sunlight.

Day and night, nearly balanced.

The Pusha was developed out of a problem: our expedition team needed a river shoe as rugged as the environments they were getting into.

So we started looking for a way to make one tougher without making it heavier, stiffer, or slower to dry. We went back through 15 years of warranty claims and found a pretty good place to start: Stitch & Bond construction. That became the foundation for the Pusha, alongside a removable midsole and wider toe box. The result is an expedition-grade river shoe built to take the abuse.

Exploring BC’s rivers over the past two summers has been such a privilege. I’ve stared up canyon walls and danced down creeks I’ve dreamed about since I was a little grom. Last summer, Mamquam and the Stikine slipped through my fingers. This summer, the rivers gave me another chance.
