There aren't many activities where a four year old, their parents and their grandparents all play the same game and the four year old occasionally wins.

Mini golf does that, which is why the design matters more than people assume. Path widths that take a pram. Ramps between holes instead of steps. Enough room around a green for a wheelchair to get to the ball. Somewhere to sit halfway round.

None of it restricts the design, as long as it gets decided early. Retrofitting access into a finished course is expensive and it always looks like an afterthought.

Most of a mini golf build is the part nobody ever sees.

Base preparation, drainage, edging, and the fall across every green. Get that wrong and the course looks fine for two summers before it starts telling on you. Puddles that sit for days. Seams that lift.

Get it right and the course plays the same in year eight as it did on opening day.

That's the part we care about, even though it's never the part in the photos.

The work Christmas party has moved out of the function room.

Teams want something to do, and venues with a mini golf course are picking up the bookings. Groups play, eat, drink and stay a lot longer than they would at a sit down lunch. The bar takings usually tell the story better than the booking fee does.

Friday night, eighteen holes, a drink in the other hand.

Mini golf has turned into a proper adult night out. Venues pairing a course with a bar and decent food are filling the weeknight and after work hours that families were never going to fill.

The design has to earn it though. Adults want holes that are actually hard, lighting that still works at nine at night, and somewhere to stand around talking between shots.

That's what we build for.

Putt putt or mini golf. Most people use both words for the same thing and nobody minds.

Ask someone who builds them and the difference shows up in the ground. Putt putt usually means the flat, straight courses a lot of us grew up on. Mini golf is the broader term now, and it covers everything from a nine hole course at a holiday park to a themed eighteen hole build with water and landscaping.

Call it what you like. What matters commercially is whether a player finishes the last hole and wants to go again.
