Dear Coaches, Parents, Players and Supporters,
As we head towards the end of another great season, with some teams already preparing for finals, we’d like to ask everyone to take a moment to stop, take stock and remember what makes our hockey community possible.
**Every game we play is only possible because people choose to give their time.**
Coaches. Managers. Volunteers. Board members. Parents. Club Committee Members. Supporters. Players.
And, importantly, **our umpires.**
Whether they are a young person learning the ropes, an adult umpire with years of experience, or someone stepping up to help because their club needs them — every umpire deserves our respect.
In respect to our junior umpires, we currently have a group of young people who have volunteered their time to learn how to umpire. Are they going to get every decision right?
**No.**
But neither do our most experienced umpires.
They are learning. They are gaining confidence. They are developing a skill that our association, clubs and players desperately need.
What they should never have to learn is that volunteering means being yelled at, belittled or made to feel unwelcome.
We all know how difficult it can be to find umpires. Clubs regularly face shortages, and when people — particularly young people — are treated poorly, they understandably decide that umpiring isn't worth it.
And then the problem gets bigger.
So, before you question a decision, complain from the sideline, or react in frustration, **please stop and think about what our young people are watching and learning from us.**
They are watching how we respond when things don't go our way.
They are watching how we speak to people who are trying to help.
They are learning what being part of a sporting community looks like.
Let's make sure we're teaching them the right things.
If you're a coach, player, parent, supporter or fellow umpire, **lead by example.** Accept the decision, move on and remember that one decision in one game is never more important than the person standing in the middle trying to make it.
And if you are an umpire yourself, you know how difficult the job can be. Please help us create an environment where new umpires feel supported enough to keep learning and improving.
Our junior umpires are absolutely open to feedback, guidance and mentoring — **when it is provided respectfully and in the right way.** If you'd like to be involved in helping develop our next generation of umpires, we'd genuinely love to hear from you.
Thanks to those who have mentored umpires this year - we really appreciate you.
At the end of the day, we're all here because we love hockey.
Let's make sure the way we treat each other reflects that.
**Stop. Take stock. Be the example.**
Because the future of our game is watching.
Thank you to every person who gives their time to make hockey happen. 💚🏑

Do you or your club have any of our trophies/shields from last season (or before that)?
If you could start organising to drop them back to the hockey stadium so we can prepare for Presentation Night and Grand Finals it would be greatly appreciated.
Junior Grand Final is Friday 4 September
Presentation Night is Thursday 17 September
Senior Grand Final is Saturday 19 September
Thank you!

It’s pretty disappointing to arrive at our lovely stadium and find rubbish like this most days.
Plenty of bins are provided. If not on each verandah - just take a few extra steps to the end of the building.
Please remember as you leave to pick up any rubbish.
This includes in the dugouts, seating and where your kids have been playing.
Our volunteers give so much of their time already to make everything run smoothly. Please help by looking after our area so they don’t have to spend time picking up your rubbish.
Check that only recycling is going in the light green bins - no food or coffee cups.

Today is Rovers Cardinals Hockey Club Day - come down and celebrate the Redbacks. Lots of hockey and fun into the night.
Plus a very special milestone with Erin Ralph playing her 400th game today.
