Former Devonport Strikers and Launceston City, Northern Rangers FC favourite son Joel Stone has retired from Tasmanian football.

“After more than 15 years of playing football, I’ve made the difficult decision to hang up the boots.

Football has been such a huge part of my life. Over the years, I’ve made lifelong friends, shared some incredible memories and experienced plenty of highs and lows.

The commitment that goes into playing football for 15+ years is something I’m incredibly proud of.

Along the way, life changed too. I’ve had children, and watching my family grow has put a lot of things into perspective. As much as football has given me over the years, there’s no doubt that family is now where I want to invest more of my time.

Walking away won’t be easy. I already know how much I’m going to miss the feeling of pulling on the boots, stepping onto the pitch, competing with teammates and sharing those moments in the change rooms. Football has been more than just a game to me, it’s been a massive part of who I am and has given me memories and friendships that will last a lifetime.

While I’m sad to close this chapter, I’m also excited for what comes next. Retirement will give me more time with my family and the opportunity to be there for the moments that matter away from the football pitch.

To everyone I’ve played with, coached, competed against and shared a pitch with over the years, thank you. Thank you for the memories, the laughs, the battles, the wins, the losses and the friendships.

To my family, without you and all your love, support and sacrifice, none of this would have been possible, I will be forever grateful for all you and I can’t thank you all enough.

#10”

Joely was such a talent to watch and one of the players you just had to keep your eyes on! You’ve had a hell of a knock mate, well done indeed 💙

100 Games - Sam Wagner

This Saturday, Northern Rangers FC celebrate the fantastic 100 game milestone for Sam Wagner.

Sam has only been part of the Ranger family for 6 years, playing his first season with Rohan Pooley’s 2021 Northern Championship squad,, after many years with Launceston United. In this short time Sam has amassed an impressive goal catalogue, scoring countless goals that in anyone else’s book would be considered worldies.

A lethal left foot that strikes fear into the eyes of every goalkeeper in the North, earned Sam the club golden boot and B&F for the Rangers NC1 in 2024 and 2025. Sam is also in contention to earn the association golden boot in the NC1 competition this season. Along with his personal accolades, Sam was part of the Northern Championship squad that won the premiership in 2022. A player showered with high praise from his teammates, Sam is often referred to as the one to watch to any newcomer at the club,, since there’s a good chance you see a brilliant goal whenever you watch him play.

Come down and support Sam this Saturday as he plays his 100th game for the club alongside his brothers Dan and Simon at the NTCA - 12:15pm kick off NC1.

300 Games - Hayden Vandervelde

This Saturday, Northern Rangers FC has the potential to add our 4th member to the 300 club. Hayden Vandervelde currently sits at 298 appearances and if recent trends continue he will reach his 300th appearance during the 2nd men’s game of the day.

Hayden Vandervelde, known best around the club as “Dos” has been playing senior football with the Rangers since 2012. During this season he made his first appearances coming off the bench for the reserves who won the premiership that season. Dos has continued to play with the club every season since, aside for some time living in Melbourne. Having played his entire junior years with Rangers as well, he is the perfect representation of a loyal one club man. For this show of loyalty and commitment to the club, he was recognised as a life member in 2025 along with fellow premiership winners Zachary Chugg and Daniel Sparshott.

Dos has won 6 premierships, playing a part of the 2012, 2015 & 2023 NC1 titles and the 2022, 2024 & 2025 Northern Championship titles. Hoping to add to those this weekend if the Northern Championship squad secures a win against Ulverstone SC, which would mark his 300th appearance with another senior title. During these seasons Dos has played nearly every position on the pitch, playing many of his earlier seasons in the backline or midfield and more recently as a forward or even in goals when needed.

To go with his on field career, Dos has assisted with coaching the NCW and NC1 squad on multiple occasions during the 2026 season and joined as a member of the board at the end of 2025. You will also notice his name on the front of every senior men’s shirt thanks to the ongoing support from the family business. Dos is a player that every club wishes they had more of, almost never misses training or games and helps out in so many ways off the pitch.

Northern Rangers FC thank you for your loyalty and efforts over the years, congratulations on a very well earned milestone and we hope to witness many more games as a player and coach in the years to come.

Come along and support Dos and the rest of the teams this Saturday as the NC men and women play in an attempt to secure both titles for the 2026 season.
