HIGH STEP PASS. ATTACK.

Coach Alan teaching a high step pass that doesn’t end when you get around the legs.

Get to side control.
Stay heavy.
Start attacking.

Armbar. Kimura. Tarikoplata.

The pass gets you to the position. What you do from there is what matters.

At Karma Jiu Jitsu, we don’t want to pass just to score points. We want to pass, control, and create a sequence of problems until we get the submission.

Get on top. Stay on top. Finish.

Karma member and paramedic Kyle brought an ambulance to camp and gave our kids the opportunity to climb inside, explore the equipment, check out the stretcher and learn a little about what paramedics do.

Of course, the lights and sirens were a pretty big hit too.

What made today even better is that Kyle isn’t just someone who came to visit Karma. He, his wife and his son have been part of our community since the beginning.

One of our favorite parts of camp is being able to introduce kids to the interesting people, careers, skills and experiences that already exist within the Karma community.

Jiu Jitsu may be what brings us together, but there is a whole lot more we can learn from each other once we’re here.

A huge thank you to Kyle for taking the time to make today’s camp extra memorable. šŸš‘

It starts with simplicity.

What are the pieces called?

How does each one move?

You don’t start by teaching a four-year-old openings, strategy or checkmate patterns. You start by giving the pieces names and learning what they can do.

Then you play.

Jiu Jitsu isn’t much different.

Learn the positions.
Learn how your body can move.
Understand the rules.

Then play.

Professor Raechel teaching chess to a four-year-old is really just another version of what we do on the mats every day.

Start simple. Build understanding. Let them play.

A good class isn’t one where everyone stays quiet.

It’s one where people feel comfortable asking questions.

Coach Alan encourages questions because questions create conversation, conversation creates understanding, and understanding makes everyone in the room better.

Then comes the part that matters most.

Get on the mats and test it.

NoGi guard passing with Coach Alan.

Ask questions. Be curious. Do the work.

There are only five belts in jiu jitsu.

So when you earn one, it’s a moment worth celebrating.

Congratulations to 17-year-old Pierce on earning his BLUE BELT. šŸ”µ

Pierce has incredible Jiu Jitsu, and he demonstrates it both inside the gym and in competition.

In his last two competitions, Pierce chose to compete in the adult division. He walked away with 9 straight wins. All 9 by submission.

That alone says a lot about his Jiu Jitsu.

But getting a belt at Karma Jiu Jitsu isn’t just about how good your Jiu Jitsu is.

It’s also about what you do for the people around you.

We constantly hear from other members of the Karma community about how Pierce has helped them with their Jiu Jitsu. He shares what he knows. He makes his training partners better. He brings others up with him.

And he makes us better coaches.

Pierce is creative, inquisitive and never afraid to question what we teach. He wants to understand why something works, then experiments with how he can make it fit his own Jiu Jitsu.

Those questions challenge us to think deeper about what we teach and why we teach it.

That is exactly the kind of student we want to promote.

And a moment like this deserved more than simply tying a new belt around his waist.

Pierce’s mom, aunts, uncles and grandmother joined us on the mats to celebrate with him. Members of the Karma community showed up to support him and, of course, to properly welcome him to blue belt with a shark tank.

One member even baked him a homemade BLUE cake. šŸŽ‚šŸ”µ

A blue belt represents a lot of hours on the mats.

But in Pierce’s case, it also represents the submissions, the questions, the creativity, the teammates he has helped, the coaches he has challenged, and the people who showed up because they wanted to be part of his moment.

Congratulations, Pierce.

Very well earned.

Now you just have to survive being a blue belt. šŸ˜‚

JIU JITSU IS NOT ABOUT JIU JITSU.

Let’s talk about INTEGRITY.

The word integrity comes from the Latin word integer, meaning whole or complete.

At Karma Jiu Jitsu, we think of integrity pretty simply:

Say what you’re going to do. Then do what you said you would do.

On Canada Day, we met some of the cast from CastBound Studios ’ Seussical the Musical.

We made a deal.

We would buy tickets and come see their show if they came out and tried a Jiu Jitsu class with us.

We bought the tickets.

Yesterday afternoon, the phone rang.

ā€œCan we come to class tonight?ā€

Absolutely.

And they showed up.

These young women brought energy, creativity, laughter and a willingness to try something completely new. But more importantly, they brought something we really value at Karma:

They kept their word.

That matters to us.

Karma Jiu Jitsu isn’t just about building our own little community inside these four walls. We want to contribute to the bigger community around us. The Ajax community, the Jiu Jitsu community, and especially the community of kids and young adults who are learning what it means to become future leaders.

Because raising good humans isn’t something any of us do alone.

Coaches, teachers, parents, neighbours, teammates, friends - we all have a part to play.

A huge thank you to these young ladies for keeping your word, stepping onto our mats and coming to play with us.

Now it’s our turn to keep ours.

If you’re looking for something fun to do this week, go support these talented young performers and see Seussical the Musical! There are showing from Aug 13th-16th.

Integrity recognizes integrity.
