Amherst Jr. 'A' Ramblers

e today. The Ramblers are the only team to play every season since that time, going into the 47th season of community enjoyment. From the very beginning, the Ramblers have had a solid backing by their fans no matter the standings, nor in what favor the playoff series was on. For the 1989-90 season, after founder Moe Bent passed away and General Eastern Home took over as a new major sponsor, hired Amherst native and former NHL player, Bill Riley as GM and Head Coach. They then won the Callaghan Cup as Atlantic Junior A champions before travelling to Vernon BC for the Centennial Cup Tournament. After a decade passed the hockey club was sponsored by P&E Distributers and Moosehead Brewery; as well as Amherst being the location of the Centennial Cup in the 1992-93 season, Amherst had quite show of hockey, making it to the semi-finals in the tournament, losing in Overtime. With financial struggles looming, even with the strong attendance, Gerry Moore who took over and renamed the team to the Amherst Ramblers In 1998 (from being the Amherst Mooseheads named by previous sponsor). The team struggled on the ice, and the question of survival arose for the first time. The debt has reached an all time high. In 2001, the Town of Amherst and supporters stepped up to help save the Ramblers, and the response was overwhelming with shareholders, local businesses and fans who tried to get the finances under control. The new directors organized a large group of volunteers, and in only two years, the debt had been paid off. The Amherst Ramblers have been very competitive on the ice, and the fan support has remained strong to date.
