The District of Saanich will launch a pilot reservation system Sept. 15 for four of its six new pickleball courts at Fowler Park in Cordova Bay.

Pickleball enthusiasts in Saanich will be able to reserve court time at the new six-court facility established at Fowler Park in Cordova Bay.

On Sept. 15, the District of Saanich will launch a pilot reservation system for four of its six new pickleball courts, allowing players to reserve court time in one- or two-hour increments through Saanich RecOnline at saanich.ca/register. Courts can be reserved seven days in advance.

The pilot project will run until the end of October.

Four courts will be reservable, and two courts will remain first-come, first-served to allow for casual, drop-in access.

Reservation fees to ensure court time are $10.50 per hour.

All courts revert to first-come, first-served when there are no reservations at a given time. A new, dedicated tennis court will also operate on a first-come, first-served basis.

A community-run indoor pickleball facility appears Penticton-bound.

Penticton City Council has approved a temporary-use permit for up to three years that would bring four pickleball courts to 301 Okanagan Ave. East.

Developer Joseph Cuzzocrea said in a letter of intent to council that his team plans to lease the facility to the Okanagan Pickleball Playground, a newly formed non-profit group.

Because the property is in the city’s industrial zone, the applicant needed a temporary-use permit to operate a recreational facility.

Council was unanimous in issuing the permit on Sept. 1.

Cuzzocrea also said there is potential to add two more courts, for a total of six.

The building, expected to serve the more than 250 estimated pickleball players in Penticton, is set to feature washrooms, a viewing area with picnic tables, and close to 30 dedicated on-site parking stalls.

It would also create more capacity for the outdoor Penticton Pickleball Club, which currently has a waitlist for new members.

“We believe the facility will provide significant social benefits to the Penticton community while utilizing a largely vacant warehouse with minimal to no impact to the neighboring properties,” the letter of intent reads.

A portion of the property is a cannabis production facility. Cuzzocrea noted that there will be no impact to the operations, with the existing security gate set to be moved to maintain the cannabis facility as a “completely separate, self-contained and secured facility.”

Cameron Betts, president of the Penticton Industrial Development Association, made no objections to the proposal in a letter submitted to the city on Aug. 26.

“While this activity does not support industrial use, we appreciate the owner’s right to monetize their spaces,” Betts wrote. “We feel this is a great use of the (temporary-use permit) as it allows review of this after three years. Further, we understand the land owner has noted to the user group, there’s no guarantee of long-term use as they may continue to develop industrial uses in the future.”

The RBCPA Installed a new paddle rack, temporary court number signage and bench seating. There will be more fine-tuning still to be completed.
