✨The Calves✨
The body’s second… heart!!

Functional Exercise: Calf Raise
Target Muscles: Gastrocnemius and Soleus

What makes it functional?
-Calf muscles are responsible for pulling the heel upwards to enable forward movement
-Calves are responsible for the final push off to the next step when doing stairs
-Strengthening your calves reduces the burden on the knee and ankle joints. By improving strength in the lower leg you get more even distribution of force and reduced strain to the joints and tissues these muscles are connected to.
-Doing calf raises helps to contract the calve muscles which then squeeze the deep veins in your legs pushing the blood up toward your heart. This supports body circulation which will help to reduce blood pooling, lower leg swelling and improve overall heart health.

Recommendations:
-Start with 3 sets of 10-20 reps, decreasing the amount of reps as you add weight.
-When you feel comfortable with your form consider moving to an elevated position (on a stair or an exercise step, with balance aids nearby) to strengthen the calf through its complete range of motion.
