Fancy some small steps to reduce theft?

It’s easy to remember your belongings and removable lights, but the battery and display are worth thinking about too.

Many cargo bike batteries can be removed and taken with you. Depending on the model, a battery guard may also be available to add extra protection over the factory-fitted lock.

Some cargo bikes also have removable displays, allowing you to take the screen with you when you leave the bike.

Keeping your cargo bike secure

Once you’ve brought your cargo bike home, using a few different layers of security can help protect it and give you extra peace of mind.

Start with a good-quality chain lock and secure the bike to a solid, immovable object. Depending on your bike, you might also have a built-in tracker, or you could discreetly add an AirTag to help you keep track of its location.

No single security measure does everything, but combining a strong lock, secure storage and a tracking device can make your bike much better protected.

Cargo bike questions, answered: How do you charge your electic cargo bike safely?

If possible, park your e-bike near a suitable socket and charge the battery while it’s fitted. If that’s not practical, as smoe cargo bikes are too big, most batteries can be removed and charged separately indoors.

Always use the approved charger designed for your specific battery. The wrong charger can create a serious safety risk, damage the battery and shorten its lifespan.

A little care when charging will help keep your battery safe, healthy and ready for your next journey.

Your first few journeys may feel a little different, so give yourself time to build confidence.

Ride calmly and assertively, without being aggressive. Choose a safe, visible road position rather than riding in the gutter, and leave yourself space to avoid drains, potholes and uneven surfaces.

Keep a comfortable pace and move with the traffic when it’s safe, but never feel pressured to ride faster than feels right. Sit comfortably, look ahead and make your intentions clear.

Is a cargo bike value for money?

When we added up the purchase and running costs using our own example, we arrived at around £1.10 per mile.

Your cost will depend on the bike you choose, how often and how far you ride, servicing costs and how long you own it. The more a cargo bike becomes part of everyday life, from school runs and shopping to commuting and family trips, the more value it can offer.

There are other benefits too, including less money spent on fuel and parking, fewer short car journeys and more time enjoying the ride.

Which cargo bike seat is right for your child?

The best seating option depends on your child’s age, development and the cargo bike model you choose.

For babies, some cargo bikes can be fitted with an approved reclined infant seat or a compatible car-seat adapter. Manufacturer guidance varies, but some systems advise waiting until a baby is at least three months old because of the vibrations involved. Always follow the guidance for your exact bike and seat, and seek advice from a healthcare professional before travelling with a young baby.

As children grow, the setup can adapt with them. Depending on the bike, children aged around two and over may be comfortable in a suitable seat in the front box or on a rear bench, with the correct restraints and protection.
