Candy Jar's Chris McGuire Kids' Author featured in The Scotsman yesterday 💛
🎉 We are absolutely thrilled to share that our wonderful children's author, Sue Palmer, has won the Holyer an Gof Publishers' Awards 2026 in Class 2b: Books for Young Adults for her beautiful Cornish mystery adventure, The Shell Secret 🐚💙
Inspired by Sue's own childhood holidays on the Cornish coast, The Shell Secret follows eleven-year-old Alice as she returns to the seaside to honour her late sister, only to uncover a mystery full of friendship, courage and hope.
Sue's success was also recognised with the prestigious Gorsedh Kernow Ann Trevenen Jenkin Cup, awarded for excellence in children's and young adult authorship. What makes this honour especially moving is that Sue's great-grandfather was made a Cornish Bard in 1940 for his contribution to the Cornish language. Receiving these awards from the same cultural organisation over 80 years later truly was, in Sue's words, "a full circle moment."
Our sincere thanks to Holyer an Gof and Gorsedh Kernow for selecting The Shell Secret as this year's winner. We are incredibly grateful to everyone who has supported Sue, the book, and our indie publishing house throughout this journey ❤️
You can find The Shell Secret in bookshops across the UK, and we're especially grateful for the fantastic support of our Cornish bookselling community, including Waterstones Truro, National Maritime Museum, Falmouth Bookseller, St. Ives Bookseller, The Edge of the World Bookshop, Black Cat Books Ltd, The Bookshop Helston and The Cornish Store who all have copies on their shelves!
Congratulations, Sue! This is so richly deserved 🏆📚🐚
