3 attacks from the 2-on-1 🤼

The 2-on-1, or Russian tie, is one of the most useful control positions in wrestling, giving you plenty of options to attack while limiting your opponent’s ability to attack back.

Here are three options we love to use at Hipe, progressing from a simple breakdown, into a single-leg entry, and finally one of our favourite throws from the position.

And, because techniques are only as useful as your ability to apply them, the final clips show Hipe wrestler Cyrus hitting that same throw in competition. 👊

If you’d like to learn wrestling in Edinburgh, whether you’re completely new or already have experience, get in touch.

Wrestling translates 🤼

Hipe member Lucy recently stepped into the ring for her first Muay Thai fight while training in Thailand, and it looks like all that time spent wrestling came in handy 👀

From throwing opponents at the Highland Games in Scottish Backhold, to hitting takedowns in submission grappling competition, to applying those same principles of balance, timing and body control in the clinch in Thailand.

Different sports. Different rules. A lot of the same skills.

One of the things we love about training different styles of wrestling and grappling at Hipe is seeing how the skills developed in one ruleset can carry over into another.

Great work, Lucy, and congratulations on winning your first Muay Thai fight (in Thailand 👀🇹🇭) 👏

More than just the weekly classes 🤼

Over the summer we had the pleasure of welcoming Brett Pastore to Hipe for a series of wrestling and submission grappling seminars.

Brett is a professional MMA fighter and highly experienced martial artist with a background spanning wrestling, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, submission grappling and other traditional wrestling styles. He has competed internationally across MMA and grappling, including fighting on ONE Championship, and has spent significant time training and competing out of Tiger Muay Thai in Thailand.

Alongside his competitive experience, Brett also has a background in teaching, which really shows in his ability to break down what he knows and share it with others.

Across several sessions, our members have had the opportunity to learn from Brett’s experience, pick up new ideas, ask questions and train together outside of our regular class programme.

Bringing experienced athletes and coaches onto the mats is something we want to continue doing at Hipe. We want our members to have opportunities to learn from different people, experience different approaches to wrestling and grappling, and keep developing beyond what we cover in our normal weekly classes.

A massive thank you to Brett for sharing his time and knowledge with us, and to everyone who came along and made the sessions what they were.

Plenty more to come 👀

What is Scottish Backhold Wrestling? 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

Scottish Backhold is one of Scotland’s traditional styles of wrestling and one of the core disciplines we train at Hipe.

Wrestlers begin chest-to-chest, each taking a fixed hold around their opponent’s back. Once the referee calls the start, the aim is simple: use trips, throws, lifts and clever footwork to make your opponent touch the ground while keeping your own balance and maintaining the hold.

It’s fast, technical and sometimes over in a matter of seconds.

Over the summer, our members have had plenty of opportunities to train Backhold at Hipe, including dedicated sessions and seminars with experienced wrestlers, alongside opportunities to put those skills into practice by competing at Highland Games across Scotland and further afield.

For us, Backhold is both a competitive sport and a chance to keep an important part of Scotland’s wrestling tradition alive while introducing it to a new generation of wrestlers.

No previous wrestling experience is needed to learn it.

Good training, good people 🤼‍♂️

A few shots from the mats at Hipe lately. Plenty of hard rounds, plenty of learning, and plenty of smiles in between.

Whether you’re here to compete, learn something new, get fitter, or just enjoy training with a good group of people, there’s a place for you on the mats.

What is Submission Grappling? 🥋

Submission Grappling is a form of grappling where the aim is to control your opponent using takedowns, pins and positional control, while creating opportunities to finish with submissions such as chokes and joint locks.

At Hipe, our Submission Grappling classes are No-Gi, meaning we train without the traditional jacket or kimono. You’ll learn how to move, control and escape from different positions, attack submissions, and put it all together through live sparring.

You don’t need any previous experience to get started, and you definitely don’t need to already be “fit enough” before you walk through the door.

Just come ready to learn.

Last Saturday the Hipe team were competing at the Highland Games yet again, this time at Airth Highland Games taking part in the 13.5 & 14.5 stone Scottish championships as well as in the open category. Our Wrestlers took falls and wins from far more experienced wrestlers and we are very proud of their efforts.
We may be the youngest club on the field, but we’re also improving the fastest.

If you want to come along to a highland games with us or to get started with Wrestling then get in touch and lets get started!

Next up you’ll see us at Bridge of Allan Highland Games this Sunday 🤼‍♂️🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

Last month we had the pleasure of welcoming Thomas Watson to HIPE for a freestyle wrestling seminar.

Thomas has enjoyed an exceptional wrestling career, including becoming a Scottish & British Freestyle Wrestling Champion, Scottish & British Backhold Wrestling Champion, Commonwealth Championship Bronze Medallist, Commonwealth Games competitor and European Championship competitor.

Rather than trying to cram in dozens of techniques, Tam focused on developing a handful of high-percentage single-leg attacks in real depth. What really stood out wasn’t just the techniques themselves, but the emphasis on timing, intent and explosive movement - helping everyone understand not only how to finish takedowns, but why each detail mattered.

To round off the evening, Tam stepped onto the mats and wrestled with the members himself, giving everyone the opportunity to experience those concepts against someone who’s competed at the highest level.

At HIPE, we’re committed to exposing our members to a wide range of coaching styles and wrestling philosophies. Bringing outstanding guest coaches into the club is a huge part of that, and we’re incredibly grateful to Tam for sharing his knowledge and experience with us.

A massive thank you again, Tam - we’re looking forward to having you in the future. 🤼
