Why did I leave the ambulance service? 🚑
For a lot of people, it seems like an exciting career blue lights, helping people, making a difference every day. And honestly, it can be. I genuinely thought it was going to be my career for life.
But after a few years in the service, I started to see the impact these jobs can have on people…
• Unhealthy rotas day shifts straight into nights, barely any recovery time, constant fatigue.
• Unhealthy habits becoming normalised surviving on takeaway food and “night shift snacks.” Trying to prioritise your health almost appeared strange.
• Realising you’re often just a number to the organisation. They say staff wellbeing matters, but meaningful support is hard to find. I tried multiple times to get support for projects aimed at improving staff mental and physical health, but was either rejected due to “lack of funding” or ignored completely.
• Seeing incredible people struggle with trauma and burnout, while the same generic “support” gets offered over and over again.
• The constant divide between road staff and control staff.
There are plenty more reasons… but that doesn’t mean I didn’t love the job. I did.
I met amazing people, saw incredible places, and even the difficult moments were all part of what made the role so unique.
That’s exactly why I’m so passionate about what I do now.
I truly believe exercise and fitness can play a huge role in supporting those working within the emergency services physically and mentally. Unfortunately, it’s something these organisations still don’t fully utilise or prioritise.
But that won’t stop me.
I’m starting small, but I’ve got big plans 💚
My goal is to make fitness, health and support accessible for people working in the emergency services because they deserve to feel strong, healthy and resilient.
If you work in the emergency services and want advice, support, or help getting back into training, my DMs are always open 🤝
