Ocean City FC 2 – 3 The Firkin Scholar FC
Well, what a game that was! A proper battle from start to finish. Massive thanks to Ocean City for hosting us!
The game started a little cagey from both sides before we settled down and started playing some football. Around the 24th minute, we won a corner which James Glendinning drilled across the face of goal, finding Callum Jinks New flying in with a bullet header to put us 1–0 up.
We managed to keep the lead for most of the half and looked set to go into the break ahead. But this is the Firkin… we don’t like doing things the easy way.
A corner came into the box, the ball bounced around the six-yard box and, of course, we found ourselves with another own goal this season. 1–1 at half-time.
The lads were a little slow for the first 15 minutes of the second half, with Ocean City coming out the stronger side. We were dealing with everything they threw at us until a clearance went more up than out and dropped to their midfielder, who dropped his shoulder and fired a left-footed shot into the back of the net. 2–1 Ocean City.
A formation change and a couple of substitutions completely changed the game. We started pushing Ocean City back and piling on the pressure.
Lloyd David found himself in the box and, as he was moving away from goal, the goalkeeper pushed him in the back. Down he went — penalty Firkin!
Up stepped debutant centre-back Reagan cox, who calmly slotted it into the bottom right corner to make it 2–2 in the 84th minute.
Then came the moment. We won a free kick right on the edge of the pitch and Nick Smale delivered the best ball of the game into the box. Once again, Jinks climbed highest and headed it home. 3–2 Firkin. 89th minute.
The management, subs and players went absolutely mental — proper limbs! What a goal.
With around 30 seconds left, Jinks once again went up for a header, colliding heads with the Ocean City player. Both players went down, with Jinks suffering a nasty wound to his head which required 17 stitches.
Thankfully, the lads held on to secure a massive 3–2 victory.
The effort from everyone today was unbelievable. Bodies were being thrown on the line, nobody gave up and everyone kept battling right until the final whistle 💛🖤
A special shout to Lloyd Marshall for his nonstop running up top, and Charlie Ferguson, who was absolutely solid at the back today.
Man of the Match: Callum Jinks - Two headed goals, involved everywhere and quite literally put his head on the line for the badge. What a man.
Dick of the Day: Josh Shaun Mctighe - drinking too much on the Firkin quiz night & waking up like Winnie the Pooh
Shout (packet of biscuits): Charlie Ferguson - party rings
A massive thank you as always to our sponsors for their continued support.
