A Diamond Debut for Alina

Last Friday night under the lights, 15-year-old Alina made her Diamond debut in Wellington United’s 4–0 win over Seatoun in the Women’s Central League.

Alina joined Wellington United last year because she was drawn to the club’s commitment to developing girls and women and creating a genuine pathway for young players to progress through the club.

That pathway has been on full display this season, with a total of 12 players under the age of 18 making their debut for the Diamonds.

While results matter in the Central League, creating opportunities for the next generation matters just as much. We are incredibly proud to be competing at the top level while continuing to develop and give young players the opportunity to step up and test themselves alongside some of the best players in Wellington.

For Alina, making her Diamonds debut was a proud moment, although she humbly admitted it was a nerve-racking experience.

“It was definitely nerve-racking, but it was really fun and exciting getting to play alongside such talented players.”

Rather than looking too far ahead, Alina is focused on what comes next: continuing to work hard, learn from the players around her and earn more opportunities with the Diamonds.

Since joining the club last year, Alina has made a hugely positive impression and earned her place in the Sapphires squad this season. Despite being just 15, she has already established herself as an important player at Premier League level, showing maturity and determination well beyond her years.

For now, Alina’s focus is simple: keep working, keep learning and keep getting better.

If she continues on her current trajectory, there is no doubt we will be seeing plenty more of Alina in a Diamonds shirt in the years to come.

Seatoun have a habit of making life difficult for attacking teams, and on Saturday it took a special piece of skill from Maddie O’Farrell to finally break the deadlock.

Receiving the ball on the half-turn, Maddie turned her defender, glided past another challenge and curled a stunning finish into the top corner to give the Diamonds the lead.

She wasn't done there. Shortly after, Maddie added her second with another composed finish, taking her remarkable return to seven goals in her first seven Central League matches.

Since arriving from EMU Soccer , Maddie has immediate impact for the Diamonds, and on Saturday she once again showed exactly why she's become such an important part of the side.
