📣SAFETY ALERT 📣

TRAILER LIFTING

What happened?:
A log truck driver sustained a serious injury in the forest while preparing to connect the trailer to a truck. The trailer drawbar swung back and hit his ankle.
This was despite industry procedures being followed.

❖ The trailer was removed from the truck and held just above ground for connecting.
❖ The trailer's front wheels were touching the ground; the drawbar was unable to be fully rotated for connection.
❖ Driver requested slight repositioning.
❖ Trailer was raised slightly to aid alignment for connection.
❖ The drawbar has released back; the driver was unable to maintain control, and it struck an ankle.

LEARNINGS
⚠ Even when following correct industry procedure, things can go wrong.
⚠ The trailer's downward angle, together with tyres touching the ground, impeded drawbar rotation.
⚠ Lifting chain was used but not levelled prior to lifting trailer.
⚠ Trailer fitted with a trailer lifting bar, but it was not used.

RECOMMENDATIONS
✅ Where fitted, trailers are to be lifted with the trailer lifting bar

✅Hold trailer level, front axle off the ground, rear axle touching the ground

✅Stop and reset if any part is not proceeding as planned.
