The Yamas and Niyamas are the first two limbs of the eight limbed path to yoga.
The Yamas are ethical restraints, and the Niyamas are personal observances.
The first of these ethical restraints is Ahimsa: Non violence, and non harming. This is not only in our actions, but also in our thoughts and our words. Ahimsa is not only about avoiding harm caused to others, but reflecting on the harm we cause ourselves.
Through yoga, meditation and reflection we get the opportunity to observe the ways we interact with our physical world and our personal one.
